right first off i have a 1999 opel astra 1.4 petrol:cool:, anyway when the car is hot, driving for about 20 mins or so, and especially after a motorway journey, when your stopped then you start off, it kind of judders and doesnt have much power and after a second of that it suddenly gets the power back happy days, but the you change into second from first at around 2000-2500rpm and the same again very little power, car judders for a second then its ok, anyway coming home from work today going onto the motor way, down the slip road, gave it a boot full:cool:, just to see what the power was like and it was normal but suddenly at around 4000-4500rpm it again lost some of its power the stopped accelerating:confused:, so changed gear and the car started accerating again.

doesnt do it when its cold, clutch isnt slipping, my guess spark plugs/ignition coil, if i can get a chance to go to a mechanic tomorrow i will but it will probally be monday:(, so i am off work sunday so may do a oil/filter change, spark plug change, maybe just maybe get a second hand ignition coil dunno yet... i'l see what you guys say first

    thanks:D

For the lower rev symptoms you describe, I'd be looking towards spark plug leads.

The symptom at higher revs could be caused by the leads too or could be unrelated.

    Just my 2c.

    They don't have leads:D

However coil packs are a common problem on these engines and would certainly give the symptoms described.

Could be clogged exhaust, cheap enough to fix (hundred euro mark). I had similar issue on a similar ages Astra.

was nearly going out to the car in the dark with a torch looking where the spark plug leads were:D:D, didnt think the car had'em, never really into second hand parts but lookin on the internet and new coils are all around €150, so would you or anyone else recommened getting a second hand coil

would it sound different if it was clogged or just a loss in power

I wouldn't recommend a second hand coil for these anyway. They are a fairly common failure so buying second hand may not get you one much better then your own.

A blocked exhaust will only really happen if the cat has come apart internally and in this case you will likely have had lambda/cat trouble or fault codes before.

    anyways...

didnt get a chance to go to a mechanic... but just before 6pm on friday poped into joe boland motor scrapyard in swords, and picked up a second hand ignition coil for €50, not bad considering i rang consort earlier that day and a brand new one was incl. vat €176:eek:(cue change of underware:)), will try and get it fitted tomorrow before work (if i wake up early enough) jeezus look at the time 5am... along with new spark plugs, oil/filter... but the oil+filter was only done around 4-5000miles ago.... but i think just to be sure, but if it looks clean enough coming out mite just trow it straight back in:cool: but stick the new filter on, so fingers crossed that will solve the problem!

One thing for sure is that the oil and filter has nothing to do with your power problem.

If you drain the oil DO NOT put the old oil back in. You will be draining off all sorts from the bottom of the sump and reintroducing it to the top of the engine. Unless you intend to change the oil and filter, leave them both alone.

Also, I can never see the point in changing either the oil or filter and not both. Change both at the same time. It's not like either are expensive!

I know this all sounds like raining on your parade but I also hope you're lucky with that coil pack. OK, it's 1/3rd of the price of a new one, but who's to say it'll be working in a months time or even once you fit it for that matter. There are certain parts that I don't think are worth buying second hand, and a coil pack would be one of them.

It seems they are available new here for €70.
