Have found some oil on the drive way this evening where the wife parks her car, on further investigation there is oil on the engine not sure the exact name but its on the right hand side and is fairly wet. I'll be taking a closer look on Sunday but any ideas what it could be, I know head gasket seems to be a symptom that sounds similar.

Car had a timing belt snap about two years ago and has been little used since, just school runs and shopping trips etc

Head gaskets are prone to weeping oil externally on these alright. They wouldn't normally leak as badly as your seems to be though.

Got to have a look under this today and am none the wiser, cleaned all the bits that were wet and ran it for a while, nothing! Just then i checked the dip stick and there was no oil on the dip stick so  stuck two litres in and checked again and it was back up.

Is there an oil sensor on these, when i was starting the car it displayed oil ok everytime, would low oil cause it too leak down to low pressure?

Got four part worns yesterday for it, very happy with them, but jayziz there are some right cowboys out there in tyres.. one told me he had four "pressure treated" german part worn 2xconti 2xbridge, for a decent price, great i thought went down and the lad was sound, he stuck the tyres on i paid him and went on my way. Car didnt feel right at all so pulled in and checked.. 2xwinter 1 summer, 1 Chinese yoke .. anger

Low oil wouldn't cause a leak.

Have you checked for a leak now that you've filled the oil level back to the max?
