Is it just me, or has there recently been an abundance of BS artists coming into the I.T. industry, particularly in non-technical PM and BA roles?

Maybe. There's not a whole lot of choice of industries in this country, so some people are trying to BS their way into IT, because it's an expanding sector.

Not sure if you're referring the roles themselves as BS or the people getting into them lately but the BA job market is very healthy at the moment so I'm not surprised the increase in people getting into it

To be fair though you're not going to get all tech roles in IT. There'll always be "non-tech" people with more business than IT knowledge but there is certainly value in that

Wait I thought the BAs were the artists, and the BSc guys were scientists/engineers!?

Anyone that can blag their way into a c++ developer job deserves it tbh :D

Will I turn it off and turn it on again OP? :P

Is this a good time to point out that one of the moderators of this forum is a BA?

    It's a great time.

In my own opinion, it's all down to the fact that IT is an unregulated profession. I couldn't set myself up in business as a dentist, GP or architect tomorrow morning.

I think the OP is referring to Business Analysts, not Bachelor of Arts

Regulation, or at least internal QA, is coming. But the industry just isn't mature enough yet.

PMI sets a standard for PMs. It's not everything, for sure, but it's a start.

IIBA certification is a lot further behind, may not be the full story yet, but it's a start. (Ironically, despite over 10 years BA experience, I won't be able to get it for a long time, if ever, due to a combination of mid-life travel, the recession, and a relationship in a city where it's hard to be a BA with a career manager. Even if I do score a job with a "career manager", I'll be starting the five years of practice again, just like someone straight out of college.)

The biggest bull****ter I ever met worked as a BA. :)

I fear for the IT industry at the moment. It's already full of people who hate their job; what's it going to be like when it's full of people who only chose it as a career because of its job prospects?

What's it going to be like when it gets dominated by women :D

This is not the biggest problem. When there will be so few people thinking of intelligent ways to provide electricity for the ever-expanding IT industry, it will all go heywire. I can tell you that there is not enough investment put towards this area. The investment is more towards software.

IT industry is full of people who hate their job because there are very few other career areas that offer decent permanent prospects. People will fight, BS and blag their way into IT positions even if they know that it's the kind of work that they would dread to do.

Well even during the bubble when there were plenty of alternative career opportunities the IT industry was still full of miserable people.

I know many people don't like their jobs, but the problem in particular with the IT industry is that it has quite a high number of shall we say socially awkward people so it's not as easy to have a bit of craic in the offce. For example, I used to work in a company where nearly everyone worked in sales - even if my job was monotonous the office was a laugh.
