BTEA mistakes?

Hey I work part with a charity for victims of abuse (im not blowing my own trumpet just putting this into perspective). Anyway the charity helps victims get back on thier feet, get an education ect. Three peole whom the charity deals with are on btea and had their payment suspended today. They hadnt even got bus fair to go to the welfare office. One of them missed a test because of this. Im driving one of them in tomorrow to find out what happened.

The charity works with some community welfare officers and we rang one enquiring about one of the kids he said that the computer said payment was suspended on his Jobseekers allowance pending further documents. Does this sound like a mistake or are more documents needed? they all handed in a form to say they were registered at college. That would be my main question my next is should a complaint be made about this. Cutting off someones btea mid semester is a really sh1tty thing to do were even thinking of going to the papers to highlight the way the state treats those less fortunate.

Wait and see why they were suspended first. You don't know why the claim was suspended - until you have a reason, which may be a valid one, there is no cause for complaint.

Dont mind me im just feeling bad for them I probraly wouldnt complain. Theres a chance that the social welfare are looking for proof that they are in attendence this semester. A friend told me it happened to him. But none of them got a letter or phone call to that affect it just seems odd.

BTEA claims get periodically reviewed - but the claimant should get a notification in the post to bring in some documentation or have a form stamped.
If the CWO can see there are some outstanding documentation required, this may be the case. Are you sure they haven't received any correspondence? Have they moved address and not informed the office?
Unfortunately there could be many reasons and they will have to speak with someone at their local office.

They havent moved address no but they are all going straight to college first thing in the morning to get a certificate of attendence from the college and then straight to the welfare office in case. Thanks for your help.

ceejay is offline so I will answer this one for you. It is unlikely that the cwo will provide temporary funding if the reason for their payments being suspended is outstanding documents. The guys need to find time to go to their sw office to see what was requested from them.
If they can produce the o/s docs there and then at sw office they can apply for a manual payment.

Ps... its unlikely that 3 letters looking for info went astray in the post.

It is unlikely your right thats why Im desperate to know what happend. Is a manual payment instantaneous once the relevant documents are required?

Once the relevant documents are produced a person can apply for a manual payment. What happens with a manual payment is that they can collect the money at a nearby post office. They may have to go back to sw office to collect slip for manual payment. So they should really go first thing in the morning as tomorrow is Friday.

Last year I finished a BA that I did on the BTEA. Once every year of my course, I got cut off.
First time it happened, SW told me that they thought I had dropped out:eek:
In subsequent years I was told that a letter had been sent to me asking for proof of attendance (which I had provided at the start of the year anyway). I had never received such letters though. Each time, I just went into the SW office with the proof of attendance and I had the payment into my bank account again the following week.
It appears to be quite a common error with the BTEA, but should be easily rectified.
