I called into a VW garage to get a spare key for my 05 golf and a spare key for my GF's 03 polo as we only have one of each
I was quoted €80 plus VAT:eek: for the polo key, and was told the golf key would be €120 plus VAT:eek:.
    I have 2 issues.
    1. Am i being screwed by this price and is there a cheaper way of getting a spare key.
    2. why don't they just tell me the anount of my hard earned cash i have to hand over the counter besides giving me a price and saying with a smile, PLUS VAT:mad:. How would they react if i said i didnt want to bother with vat. I know they have to charge it, but just tell me the price!!! Rant over.

i know that a 02 golf key which has no remote locking is 100 euro at a keysmith... has to be encoded.
if the golf key has remote locking i would say that isn't too bad

The Golf has remote CL. the polo is open and locked using the key.

Sounds about right, spare keys dont come cheap.

Very annoying about the "Plus Vat". A real kick in the nuts.

It will probably be cheaper to get a spare key versus having to deal with what happens if you end up with no key at all?

thats good compared to the €220 i was quoted for my 06 focus

    Thats a good price OP.

speaking from a current golf owner and former Rover 75 owner! (the rover keys are at least 3-400 afair)

    Semi-related...

The battery on my remote is going (06 Passat) and while I have a spare key at home, I might as well just change it.

Can the battery for this be got anywhere that would sell say watch batteries?

Is it just a straight swap - ie: the car isn't gonna get confused and lock me out if I do change it?

Pretty sure yes is the answer. Take out the old one and put the new one straight in. Should be fine.

Yes they are like a little tablet and you can get them in Dunnes. They have a little number on them so make sure you bring your old battery as there is different sizes..

Spare Key replacement always expensive! There is a lot of security around the codes and the keys are cut in Germany - but the price plus VAT issue... yeah that's annoying :(

    Methinks it might be time to invest in one of these;

BTW, I am currently in the process of sorting out a spare key for a Mark IV Golf- a blank cost me €7 from Ebay. Not sure yet what it's gonna cost me to get it cut and the transponder coded.
