    hello people!

my old dell is getting a little long in the tooth so i'm on the lookout for a new laptop. something general purpose and maybe to play the odd game.

which manufacturers make a decent product these days? and which ones are to be avoided at all costs?

    many thanks! :)

I keep recommending them to people, but Lenovo with an Intel chip is where my money would go.

Have a look at this thread which has lots of great info: Buying a Laptop: The current Generation. Post #6 has this graph which persuaded me to go for Asus (should arrive tomorrow):

very nice graph! it's a shame about the HPs' reliability - there's a lot of good ones knocking about with high specs and not too expensive either! :D

i've never considered lenovo before but they seem to offer a lot for a decent price.

The whole faulty Nivida chip thing was going on at the time so probably skewed the results their abit for HP.

I still wouldn't buy a Laptop from them though.

    Printer Yes, Laptop No

I was torn between a Toshiba and a Sony, got the Sony in the end but never considered the Asus, I guess I was swayed by the names.. Could be worse, Sony's only 3rd

This report is about 2.5 years old. Things can change a lot with this type of tech in a couple of years. I'm looking to buy a laptop myself and have seen this report quoted a lot. I currently have a HP laptop from 2007 that has had all the problems with the nvidia card. I think HP have improved since then but i dont know if I'd buy a HP again.

It depends on the laptop. How much do you want to spend? Typically Acer makes decent low-end stuff, but their high-end stuff is generally best avoided. The opposite is generally true of ASUS. Even then, generalisations like this don't really work. Budget, budget, budget.

I have a toshiba almost 1.5 years old - no issues (screen went but that was water damage)

I also have a vaio I bought in 2005 or 2006 and it's never had a problem either and I still use it alot.

I have both a Dell and a Toshiba laptop, neither have given me any bother whatsoever. The Dell was a fairly hi spec machine when I bought it four years ago (out of date now obviously) and is used solely for work. The Toshiba is used day in day out by myself, my wife and our eldest daughter and has been dropped and abused in every way you can think of for the past few years, not a mark on it and still boots to usable desktop in about 30 seconds, has never crashed or given any trouble. Would strongly recommend a Toshiba, it just seems to be really well screwed together and reliable. I will be buying one again once my current one finally dies.
