    Hey

I was there in July two years ago. It's hot and very humid but I wouldn't let that put you off. I hated Cancun...just lots of resorts and a really kippy town...and lots of Americans there on holidays. Very hard to get on the beach as all the hotels have their own bit of beach.

Playa del Carmen is much nicer and not too far away. It's a little more authentic but still quite touristy. Lots of nice places to eat and the beach is lovely.

Once you get outside of there...San Cristobal de la Casas is a nice spot and the ruins at Palenque are really cool.

Oh, the pools are great, Agua-Azul and Misol-ha, really worth a visit. Fantastic for swimming. They're like big holes in the ground, really deep, lovely cool water. Highly recommend.

If you can get into Guatemala, I'd highly recommend...the Mayan ruins there are even more impressive.

    Have a fantastic time.

Just dealing with the Yucatan peninsula, Cancun is a pure package holiday destination and is as you would expect. Lines of resorts packed together. Playa del Carmen is nicer but is gradually merging into Cancun and was the fasting growing city in the world at one stage. The poor US economy and Swine flu have probably slowed down the growth a bit.

If you would like for something different to Cancun but in the same area, Isla Holbox might be nice for a honeymoon. The northern coast of Yucatan in general is beautiful. There are very few tourists and the coast has a large part as designated as Nature Reserves.

For backpacking and general traveling around, if you are comfortable driving there, rent a car. It will give you the freedom to visit authentic villages, deserted beaches and practically empty Mayan ruins. Otherwise the bus service is really good with nice coaches.

Tulum is a nice village south of Playa del Carmen. It has spectacular ruins on the beach and you can stay in a beach hut cabana. The Cenotes are a network of limestone caves where you can do some mind blowing dives in the caverns at the entrances to the caves. If you are not a diver you can snorkle there too. There are loads of them around Tulum.

Chichen Itza is an amazing Mayan ruin but you have to visit it first thing in the morning. I was there at 8am and a was the only person there for about an hour and then all the tourist buses from Cancun started to arrive. There could be 5000 people there easily. This is where the rental car comes in!

And like the other poster said Guatemala is amazing too...but that's another post.
