i have to travel to thailand in the next few weeks as a work opportunity has arose, ive been unemployed 3 years now and have a full medical card. i got my injections required for visiting tropical countries and the gp wants to charge me 100 euro as they fall outside the scope of the medical card. anyone now if this is true? with the cost of just getting to the country alone on my social welfare, this 100 eur charge is one i could well do without

I think there are organisations that do free vaccinations, but if you've already the shots from your GP, then I'm afraid you'll be asked to pay for them.

You may be able to get a one off 'exceptional needs payment' from your local health centre community welfare officer, especially if it's a permanent position.

No, once youve actually paid for the essential item, the CWO will not reimburse in retrospect.

A second option may be to check with your future employer to see if they will cover the costs as most employers will do this, are they covering the flight?

As far as I know what I guess you could call elective or optional treatments like that aren't covered - I know at my previous doctor I'd have to pay to get them. But didn't you discuss payment before getting them done? I was in Thailand a couple of years ago and didn't bother getting any shots, still alive. Is it an English teaching job btw?

As far as i know medical card does not cover travel vaccinations. I remember seeing a note in my GP's office stating that travel vaccinations is one of the items not covered
