Think of going to Koh Samui in September for my honeymoon, possible staying there for two week and a week somewhere else. Would anyone have an suggestion for the extra week.

    Thanks,

We went to Phuket, the Amari Coral Beach in Patong. Really nice, highly recommend it. We were a bit dubious about going to such a touristy place, but this hotel is 10 mins walk from the touristy stuff, yet is very quiet,on it's own little beach. Would be good to see the touristy stuff,eg ping pong ball shows, ladyboy shows, etc after relaxing on the other island. We ate down town each night, for a 2 course meal,2 drinks, and a very good tip, expect to pay about €10. Massages are about €6-€10 per hour,or of course more if you want more;)

    Thanks,

we did thailand as well and got advice from some couples who gone before us so did chiang mai for 5 days which was just about enough as theres only so many temples and elephant rides you can do, but nightlife was great, really enjoyed it up there, then did bangkok for 4 days which was just enough due to the size and smells and then down to koh samui for 10 days.

Wife and I both thought all the days were just about right, if anything we could have stayed longer in samui. Buy all your souvenirs in chiang mai and imitation clothes in bangkok, theyre all the same in samui but 20% extra. But come back on after you decide what youre doing and we can talk more.

Greatest holiday destination Ive ever been.

We're planning on heading to Thailand too, except we're going in Sept/Oct. We're also planning on heading to Chiang Mai, except we'll probably go to Phuket/Phi Phi islands rather than Koh.

Chiang Mai sounds interesting I'm thinking maybe Bali too for a week. Flights from Bangkok seem not too bad.

I think 2 weeks might be a little too long, I was very quickly bored on this island, but I guess it depends what you are into. If you only want sun and relaxation then it should be ok. There are the other islands close by, Koh Phangan is a close boat ride away and Koh Tao a bit further. Koh Phangan has good parties, half moon and full moon are the big ones and Koh Tao is good for diving.

Just stumbled on this. This time last year myself and my wife were getting ready for our honeymoon in Thailand. Man, I wish we could go again. Anyway, this is what we got up to:

5 days in Krabi (1st day kind of wasted due to travel). Best thing about this was probably the hotel we stayed in. Of all of the things we did on our trip, this was right up there. I'm not one for lazing around in hotels but this place was fantastic, loved it: http://www.amari.com/vogue/ worth every penny. Sorry we didn't stay longer. Paradise. Krabi town (20mins away) is nice to shop/eat/drink in.

Phi Phi island. We stayed too long here. 6 or 7 days when 4 would have been plenty. Still really nice but accomodation (unless you go for the 5 stars) doesn't seem great (from talking to others and getting a feel for the place). The really nice hotels were a good bit away from the pubs and after 5 days of chilling out, we were up for having a few drinks. Good places to go for sessions but we weren't blown away by the food. We stayed on long beach which was really nice but again the hotel was lousy. You have to get a longtail boat (5mins) to the main area at night but it's worth it imo as the beach is clean and quite (most of the time). Snokelling was great here and diving (day trip) was cool. Saw lots of stuff.

Chang Mai for 5 days. Loved this hotel too, they recommended some brilliant stuff for us to do : http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g293917-d677157-Reviews-Rimping_Village-Chiang_Mai.html We took a bike tour where we visited temples, a leper colony :D, kids school, and some food places. We did a day thai cooking course and a day trek. Man, wish we could do it all again. Great times.

Bangkok: last 3 days. Koh San road (spelling?) isn't nearly as bad as people make it out. I'd have no problem staying there again. Great vibe around. Busy city (no sh1t!) but happy to see the little part we did see in 3 days.

Definitely worth doing Bangkok at the end rather than the start. After the wedding build up and the travelling, you really are just fit for relaxation.

Anyone wanna know more give me a shout/PM. I did a lot of research and digging around for info so I thought I'd put the above together as it might help someone.

Enjoy OP.....wherever you go in Thailand, I'm sure you'll love it.

just to point out that althougt the weather is fine in Koh Samui at that time of the year it is rainy season in the likes of Phi Phi & Phuket at that time of the year so make sure you research the weather where your going.

Reasher this before deciding where else to add

Is there really such a difference in weather either side of the peninsula?

I watched the weather forecast every day in October 2011 for Thailand (in research for an Oct 2012 honeymoon) and the whole country looked covered in rain every single day. Thailand was scratched off as a honeymoon destination for that reason.

Koh Tao is just a stones throw and in my opinion is much nicer than Koh samui.

Last year was a bad year for Thailand and they had a lot of flooding, much more so than they normally would have had. I don't think that all wet seasons are as bad, at least that's what we're counting on ;)

    Massive difference.

Different rainy seasons on the western islands as opposed to the eastern ones.

+10000 Tao is amazing, unspoiled compared to Samui

I did all the islands of thailand as well as the mainland when i was backpacking and would agree that Chang Mai is amazing and you shouldn't miss bangkok. I also thought that Koh Tao was much nicer than Koh Samui...less touristy and spoiled. If you are happy to stay in koh Samui then the north of the island is just amazing...you are very removed from the tackiness. 2 weeks might be a bit long tho...its a small island...ie. you can drive around it in an hour or two! What i would do if i was planning a honeymoon there would be go to Koh Samui for 3-4 days at the start because you can fly there directly. Then move onto one of the other islands like Kho Phangan (you dont have to do the full moon parties or anything like that...the other parts of the island away from haad Rinn are beautiful), or you could go to Kho Tao and do some diving or snorkling...absolutely amazing! Then id head back to the mainland and do a few days in each bangkok and chang mai, the trekking in chang mai is unforgettable and its a shame to go to thailand and miss the capital so bangkok is worth a few days...i agree with the earlier poster that theres lots going on on Kho San Road but it is party-street with lots of backpackers so if you dont want that then you can always stay in a place in the business district or something. Whatever you decide to do you wont go wrong in thailand...i spent 7 weeks there and if it wasn't for that id go there on my own honeymoon but my fiancee wants to go somewhere we haven't been before! Good luck and enjoy!
