Surely this would only apply if you move back to the UK and take the car with you, not sell it here first?

Surely it would be the new owner claiming it back too?

Handy if you could export a load of Junkers with high vrt.

dunno peeps , jus i was told that i can claim it back !! because i payed the vrt and drove the car , but when the car gets registered in another country ( northern ireland / england ) that i should be entitled to claim back that money i payed to have the car registered here...

Sure if that was the case we would all sell our cars in the UK and claim back the VRT we orignally paid. I think someone has been yanking your chain.

Firstly I don't think its implemented yet, secondly I think it may be for trade only but I'm not sure and thirdly it will only be the residual VRT.

As in if you paid 2k VRT for a car worth 10k and its now worth 4k when you sell it outside the state, the reclaim would be €800 and not 2k.

No sell it here first but for export, its to make our used car prices competitive abroad and to make it easier for dealers and private individuals to sell irish used cars abroad allowing more people to buy new cars here because the used cars must be replaced by something.

No the last legal owner of the car in ireland would be claiming it back and if selling a car they could adjust their asking price taking into account the vrt rebate .

Handy if you could export a load of Junkers with high vrt.

There will be some minimum value that a car must meet before a rebate applies , who decides that value ? Rosslare I presume . The ammount you get in a rebate will be far less than you pay to import the same car i guess. Administration is expensive.

I'm sure you were told this and didn't actually read it anywhere!

I don't think any British people would be fussed about buying our used cars, here generally badly kept, and started out in the uk with higher mileage to start with.

Yes residual Vrt only as MYOB said and not original , but if the residual is below a certain ammount you wont be entitled to any rebate .

I rang Revenue, and asked them, and this is what I was told: the announcement in the Budget was exactly that: an announcement. That section of the Finance Act hasn't even gone before the Oireachtas yet, and then it has to be brought into effect, by Ministerial Order - earliest musings of this are.........end of May.

But then it'll be holiday time.

..see where this is (not) going, yet......... ?

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Particularly since everything is worth a minimum of €2k according to the VRO :D.
