trying to fix an issue with a satellite pro A100 and it has me stumped. When you hit the power up button, every thing goes as normal, past the bios/toshiba bla bla screen, windows xp loading screen appears and all proceeds as normal. Screen then goes black for a second while white cursor appears. The blue screen to signify start up kicks in and thenBOOOOOOOOOOOOM the power goes like someone just turned out a light!

    Ive done the following:
    1) battery out, press power for 1 min, restart....
    2) Changed out hd with fully tested and working one......
    3) tried running recovery from xp disks
    4) tried loading ubuntu but fails after 'try ubuntu without installing...'

Thing is, the laptop fails nearly the exact same time after boot, every time.

    Any ideas people?

Not sure about this one but some things to try / check. Try taking out one ram stick and see if it boots, then if it doesn't, try it with the other stick in and the first one out.

Also check if the fan is running.

How long will it stay on if it's on the bios screen?

Could be overheating, if the fan is running, can you open it and see if there is much lint/dust in the fan blocking it. Try Compressed air if you can't open it.

Or Try a Vacuum against all the Air vents on the underside and side of it, blocking the space between the rest of the vacuum nozzle and the outside..

As far as i know, the A100 has a known overheating issue.

sorry, was away for the past week. Getting back to this pain in the ass problem again. Ive done the following as regards to eliminating possible problems to determine whats causing this issue:

*Swapped our hd with confirmed working units running same os
    *changed/tested all ram chips
    *used different power adapters
    *ran Ubuntu cd
*replaced fan/ cleaned out original unit
    *replaced battery
    *tested cmos battery

Heres the only single thing thats consistent about this problem - exactly 1minute after powering up, the machine shuts down, everytime. Ive timed this across a range of retests and the same thing occurs. Im stumped here, really stumped!:confused::confused::confused:

Really does sound like its overheating.

Perhaps reseating heatsink with new thermal paste?

try it on battery alone. Can you stay in BIOS forever or it is only 1 minute too?

It's most likelly a problem with CPU power supply somewhere on motherboard. It could be CPU power converter / capacitors around it or CPU itself / capacitors around it.

Apart from that, I've seen once a toshiba that would ONLY work correctly on designated genuine charger.
