I wanted to go , but missed it due to work . I heard it was attended by 400 people, which is great if true.
Would like to know the outcome myself.

I wouldn't go to anything that was attended by a failed almost bankrupt developer like muck Walsh or that other waster minger Flanagan.

Wow-great turnout for Carlow for ANY sort of a protest meeting. Is this the start of something BIG? Lets hope it continues now-especially this Sat. Can anyone from the organising committee clarify the situation re:Sat-time,location, etc.?

Well, a good crowd 'got out there' and now it's time to step it up. When we all get our government propaganda through the the post,we should drop it into our local T.D.s office. In Carlow that would be Pat Deering's on the Old Dublin Road-across from St.Leo's. Or just hand it back to the postman-unopened-that way you don't have to pay for the return postage.Lets follow this through to the end.

What exactly is the purpose of this silly advice? Who has time to sit at home all day and wait for the postman to arrive? If you don't want to receive such information, you don't have to read it so why not just recycle it?

That's what I regularly do with the gibberish I receive in my letterbox from the Workers Party/Socialist Worker, etc. on issues like the Household Charge. And I find it works a treat.;)

The purpose is to let people know they have a choice. Oh,by the way, there's approx 400,000 who are sitting at home and not just waiting for the postman.
Let whoever sends it out recycle it.

To bring this back on topic, I think that alot of people are taking the attitude of wait and see in regards the household charge

    Joe.ie Report
Over 95% haven't registered for household charge
    today at 7:38 am

Less than five per cent of households have paid the household charge with only a month and a half till the deadline.

Of the current Irish housing stock of 2,004,175, only 96,668 had registered for the charge as of yesterday. Even subtracting the vacant housing stock, that would leave over well over 1 million homes still to organise payment.

It was probably with those figures in mind that the Government has decided to send 'gentle' reminders to houses across the country. The leaflets are being delivered this week, so if you have got yours already, don't be disappointed, it should be with you by Friday.

The leaflets from the Department of the Environment instruct homeowners about how to pay the €100 household charge. But, there's an upside for Irish business. Citypost won the contract to deliver the instructions. So, Enda Kenny's jobs plan is already paying off.

People have until the end of the March to register, but must get it done by March 1st if paying by instalments.

The payment website www.householdcharge.ie was launched on January 5th, but has so far not got as much traffic as Environment Minister Phil Hogan would probably like.

Protest march which is part of a coordinated national day of protest is on this Sat the 25th Feb assembling at the Croppy Grave at noon and walking to the Liberty Tree.
I'm going to show my support and take part in a protest march for the first time in my life.

Where can I protest against this protest?

It scares me that people believe the nonsense this crowd are spouting about people having to "consent" and about it being "unconstitutional". Both claims are false and incorrect. Factually incorrect as backed up by examples.

I'm going to show my support as I cannot afford to give anymore to the government / local services / Bond Holders.

I work approx. 45 hours a week in a hard job and have virtually no disposable income to show for it, I cannot afford it it is as simple as that. I'm positive that there is others who also cannot afford to pay that are in a worse off situation than me.
@ testicle, I'm sure if you went along to the march and protested against people who cannot afford to give anymore I'm sure it will not be an issue. I have nothing at all to do with it so I would not know.

With respect, there isn't much we can do. Your not being taxed for the laugh.

We are in debt. Big debt. The country is in a mess. Expect cuts and taxes to raise funding. Its not going to get easy, its going to get harder.

I think that kind of attitude is partly the reason why the country is suffering so much. We elected people in the recent past that let this country get into this mess. It was'nt me our you Sully that caused the problems we are all facing , so I have to take a stand against me paying for it.
I do agree that it needs fixing and need cuts in various areas , but my point still stands , I pay enough in taxes and charges and cannot afford to pay any more.
Anyway see you at the march on Sat:p

But the government alone cant fix the problem. They need to tax and make cuts. We elected them knowing this was going to happen. Its pointless taking a stand against something that we need to implement.

What do you propose is cut instead of this tax? Childrens Allowance? Unemployment Benefit? Beds in Hospitals?

Right, let's be clear, This thread is about events and discussions specifically around the Carlow region.
If you want to discuss the general topic of the tax, the why's and wherefore's of it I suggest you start a thread in the Politics Forum Link

Any more off topic discussion will result in the thread being closed and infractions issued.

This is a household charge and goes to the local authority.

Now if we don't want street lighting, donl;t want street cleaning, don't want green spaces, don't want clean running water, donlt want sewage treatment, don't want social housing, don't want help with rent, don;t want public libraries, don't want school traffic wardens etc etc etc, then don't pay.

If you want any of the above, do pay.

It really is as simple as that.

If SF and the likes have another way of earning the money (excluding tiger kidnapping and robbing banks), I'd love to hear about it.

You have a good point there, but if it was going directly to our county council to fund these services why isnt it being paid directly to them. Why havent they set out their running costs (excluding court cases) and calculated how much EVERY household pays. The more of a population a county has ,the more the cost of running the services for that county. With this tax going directly to government whos going to guarantee that the money collected in each county is going to go to that council.ANYWAY I AM NOT PAYING .

Wow,talk about scaremongering! Do you honestly think that the Household Charge collected in Carlow will be spent on those items. Your money will be going to pay this individual and to provide a healthy pension for him and others that are complicit in the Council with his actions.

    http://www.villagemagazine.ie/index.php/2011/06/826/

Absolute disgrace that Phil Hogan stopped the investigation into what was going on in the Council. Also a lot of Councillors need to cough up answers of what was going on with planning also because they would have needed to vote through most of it.

The Council should come out and make their pension/payment structure more transparent. We all know that Councillors will be collecting there pound of flesh also. The whole thing is a farce and Hogan is basically walking people into a huge property tax trap for the coming years. A figure of €350 approx is already being bandied about for future charge. Once you are registered no point in crying about it in the future.

For anyone who thinks Phil Hogan is capable of telling the truth,

    http://electionleaflets.mygov.ie/full.php?q=198#l427

Finally would you really trust Carlow County Council with your money?
