I want to pass on an old computer to someone else. To log on as administrator requires a password which I've forgotten. Is there any way to reset the password? I've looked at several sites that advertise same but not sure what's safe.

Burn this iso to a disk and boot from it. It'll load up and give you the passwords for all accounts on the pc.

You can reset the admin password with http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/.

Any special reason why you want to log on as admin? I'd be more interested in removing any personal info. If its a laptop (or even not, maybe they do this with towers these days too), there may be a recovery partition which will put the machine back to day 1 (i.e. like when you first turn it on)

    Have you tried 'password'.

    Also give 'Password' a shot.

Thanks for your replies folks. One of my grand kids told me to try: control panel - user accounts - change passwords. It worked - I was able to delete the administrator account plus one other one. The pc is now clean and be passed on to another set of grand kids. Thanks again.

From your original post, it wasn't clear that you could log onto the PC at all.
    Anyway, well done.
