Looking for a photography course

    Hi all! :)

So I was just wondering if anyone could offer any ideas for a course in photography? Either around the Carlow or Limerick area's? (Or even Dublin- I thought Ballyfermot offered one but apparently not...) And I dont want to go back to Limerick Senior... Did an art course there last year and I didn't like the it one bit... Although the photography teacher was lovely herself! But the place in general doesnt seem worth it...

Preferably a Fetac type course too, as I cannot afford college fee's. I have checked FAS.ie and all they have is a learning disabilities one.

Or is there some way you can train under a photographer themselves?

Any help on this matter would be appreciated :D

    Thanks guys! :pac:

I am also looking for a course, i was in particular looking at the Photography Institute one due to me being unable to get the same day off every week to attend a class..I already did one diploma with CMIT which cost €500 and to be honest it is not worth the paper it is written on. It was more a photo editing course and not a good one at that.

Has anyone any clue about the Photography Institute course?? i have a €200 voucher but could do with some insight before signing up

all I can advise is do your research - while there are lots of places offering photography courses, they are not all accreditated/recognised, contact the places offering these courses and ask if they are accreditated/recognised by any governing body ?

the information these courses give you is generally available online - its just given to you in a structured manner so it makes it easier to understand/learn, I personally dont think any of the courses available are worth paying for because they are not making you more qualified (you may learn some stuff but you could have learned that without paying a couple of hundred for the privilage)

Personally I say avoid....but its your money, the information is out there - hang around in the photo forum long enough and ask questions we're all willing to help, I've taken plenty of boardsies out - covering news, local, national and international sports events.

it almost begs the question, is it important to go to school and have an accredited cert/diploma etc to be in the business, or is it just as good to do all the learning you can via online tutorials, short courses, camera clubs, pushing yourself to do projects and having a good eye and real talent.
i was wondering if there is a snobby side ( for the want of a better word) that think you have to have letters after your name.

also wondering if you dont have the normal canon/nikon camera will you be cut off from work as well.

sorry for going off topic, its something ive no experience in and was just thinking if thats the case 'in the real world' , im sure a photography business side of things course would be very good , if it was realistic.

I agree.... It certainly seems like a certificate isnt worth anything, its more of a field where your work does the talking!

its not just your work ...its your ability to talk/interact with people .... your personality needs to come out and this earns you a lot of work.....your imagination and abilities allow you to grab their attention, you need to convince them to part with their money.
