Converting out buildings into dwelling

    Hi

My mother is living in the family home atm, she is a widow. She feels the house is too big for her to live in now, expensive to heat etc as she is on the pension. The house is basically an old farmhouse and there are several out buildings and some land.
She was considering converting one of the out houses to an apartment that would suit her needs and selling the main house to pay for that and have some money for old age
Just wondering if it is possible to do this type of conversion/ what planning permission would be required ?
    thanks

best to discuss the project and the particulars with an arch / arch tech.
they will be best placed to see how this mater could be approached with the planners and what pitfalls there might be as regards planning, such as subdivision of the existing site and expectable reasons for sale or new build.
