The recommendation from many would be don't get one. It gives you a false sense of security and drivers driver closer to you as it also gives them a false sense of security too. There also the fact they seem to not be very succesful in actually protecting you from the true dangers on the road.

I would say getting a mirror on your handle bars is actually better from my own experience. Much more aware of my surroundings as a result and less likely to be surprised by other road users from behind.

Get the cheapest one you can that looks half decent. All helmets sold meet the minimum safety requirements, and most of them aren't any appreciable amount safer than that. More money just buys you a flasher helmet and sometimes more aerodynamics. Spending less on a helmet isn't less safe.

Get one that fits you, there is nothing more annoying than a helmet that doesn't fit your head. Any of the known brands would be fine.

True, but I think the principle differences in more expensive helmets are more to do with lighter weights and more venting (not that it's so important here at this time of year).

OP, any biking helmet is fine as long as it's comfortable on you. This one's a beauty and it's cheap too :)

I Recommend "Giro" Why? because it fits. (Nice color too) AND they've a good range to suit all budgets!

Can you clarify who are "the many" in question and what qualifications they Have?

"The recommendation from many would be don't get one"

I think you should visit Beaumont Hospital and talk with the medics out there who deal with head injuries and see what they think of bicycle helmets.

To suggest not wearing a helmet is somehow safer is just plain ridiculous and misleading.

make sure you get one that leaves you with decent helmet hair when you take it off

as already said, the more expensive helmets will be lighter and have better ventilation.

dont mind that car drving close bollox, all cars drive close .

just picture yourself being fed and having your hole wiped by a helper for the rest of your life - and not in a good way

    then buy one.

just bought a BELL in cyclesuperstore for 39.95, they makes decent enough motorcycle helmets so would think they do ok on cycle lids as well

This has the same validity as the all cars drive close by. In your words, bollox.

Cut it out, OP wants advice on a helmet, for the purpose of not taking this off-topic into whether or not helmets prevent injuries, in this thread we're going to assume that they do work. Feel free to start up a new thread debating helmets usefulness but out of respect for the OP's question can we stay on topic please?

I picked my helmet to match my club gear, it's a bell, it's nice. Think it was about €60.

In a previous thread of this nature, kuro man posted a list of helmets that conform to the Snell standards, which are more rigorous than the EU standards:

(I have no recommendation to make myself, as I have no recent experience of wearing one.)

I bought a Bell Sweep off a guy on this forum, extremely happy with it. Don't even notice when I'm wearing it. I had a cheapo 25 Euro one before it which I hated. If you're gonna be cycling for a long time its definitely worth getting whatever one is the most comfortable/cool looking.

What's wrong with Aldi/Lidl helmets whenever they are on offer?

In truth, not a whole bundle. But if you're putting in a couple of hours or more on your cycle, you might find a badly fitting lid more annoying (I did!). Also, the extra vents will be welcome when you get a sweaty head.

From what I understand, if helmets are poor-fitting (if they don't lie comfortably and firmly against your head), then they're not going to work very well in dissipating the force of linear impacts (which is pretty much what helmets are claimed to do).

I claim no knowledge of how deficient the Aldi/Lidl helmets are in this department, if at all.
