Replacing a back windscreen wiper - Help!

    Hi everyone,

New to this forum but in a bit of a predicament and would appreciate your advice.

Some little f**ker tried to break my back windscreen off the other other night. My OH has examined it, as has a local mechanic and said that the whole arm needs to be replaced.

It's a 2010 Toyota Yaris. I rang Toyota yesterday and they told me the part would be €42. I rang them again today and they said the total price of part plus VAT plus labour would be around €100.

I thought this to be very steep just for the back windscreen wiper and I don't think the labour should be much or even charged at all seeing as it wouldn't take long to remove the broken one and fix the new one.

I have another garage coming back to me today with a price, but I was wondering what would be an average price for the above? And would I be able to just buy the part from Toyota and get my OH to fix it himself, would there be many tools involved? (Sorry for my naivety)

A socket set should be more than enough for that. Also, get a part number and do some Googling. You might find it cheaper online.

If it attaches externally to a spindle (usually the case in my experience) then should be very easy. Pop off a plastic cap and undo a nut with a socket as EPM says.

If it still operates (while bent and all) then the mechanics work still and an arm can be got from online or a breakers yard.
    Check ebay.

    Thanks for the replies.

Probably another stupid question, but what is a socket set and is it expensive?

You'd pick one up in any Woodies/B&Q etc etc. Small set would do ya, as long as it covered the 8mm to 12mm range you'd find the right size I'd say.

Probably won't get a better value one than this socket set Handy yoke to have anyway.

Although, if you don't already have a socket set and you have to ask, it might be better to go to your local trusty garageman (not the dealer)? Ask him how much to remove old one and fit a straight one if you supply the part. Can't be that much.

should be the easiest thing in the world to replace, unscrew nut, place new arm, screw back on nut and your done.

someone will have one, or a 13mm spanner...you don't need to go buying tools. Phone up a local breakers yard, Id say you'd get one for a tenner and someone (perhaps from boards) will fit it for nothing.(I would if you were in Cork)
