I was looking at http://geoscene.ie/res/gmaps/mines/mines.htm about the mining heritage of County Galway.

It lists 3 mines in in the Galway city environs... Brownville (beyond Bushypark on R side of road), Rinville West (behind the 16/17th tee on the Oranmore golf course) and Cappanaveragh in Salthill !

Does anyone have any more information about this old mine ?

    ?

The Galleon restaurant is built on top of buried treasure - You bring the metal detector and I'll bring the kango.

Perhaps some of the planning docs for these locations will have info on it.

Thanks for that link Bob ! The various Ordinance Survey maps with the overlay function make it a great resource for investigating local history.

It appears that the lead mine destroyed the Cappanaveragh ring fort, shown on the 1842 map, and was itself in turn shallowed up by modern housing.

Those ring fort guys had great ventilation up there and a fabulous view of the bay !

take a look at the Geological Survey's mapviewer - http://spatial.dcenr.gov.ie/imf/imf.jsp?site=GSI_Simple (use Internet Explorer)

it doesn't look like there was ever any massive deposits of ore, scratchings more like.
