Here's the article on RTE: http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0207/nct.html

A car dealer was fined 1200 EUR for selling a clocked car today.

Not enough, that he got fined 1200 quid. He had to buy the car back at the sales-price that he sold it for. In whatever state it might be now.

That could get pretty expensive for some deals out there.

    /M

Let's generously estimate the chance of being done for overclocking as one in a thousand. At a €1,200 fine at stake, this means that overclocking a car costs €1 in terms of risk, car can then be sold for hundreds or thousands more compared to the same car not clocked

    Crime pays.

Fine should be a multiple of that plus criminal conviction and suspended jail sentence. For the first offense.

Crime does appear to pay in many instances unfortunately.

The dealer has the added bonus of looking like a complete boll!x aswell. The serious face on the fooker, wouldnt mistake him for anything less. Cannot stand people like him.

At least they said his name so you know whom not to buy car from (in Galway).

Should be fined a € for every mile or kilometer they knock off.

NCA Chief Executive Ann Fitzgerald said that today's result "sends the message to traders that misleading practices such as this will be robustly dealt with".

She should have added.....if you are caught....

Which nobody ever is because there are no checks, its up to us to try and figure it out, then face the dealer/simi denial. Then have the dealer say he didnt know:mad:

I agree, this should be treated way harsher than it is, its theft!

€1200 is a small risk to take given the mark up these crooks can make by giving cars a hair cut. This sends out a message alright, it says take a chance, if you get caught you can still profit from it even after paying a fine. Also what's the chances these places just change the name overhead their door and trade from another rented unit a week later.

This is another reason why this country is in the mess it is in.

In another country you can guarantee they would be fined several times that and face prosecution, but not here. Its this attitude that allows murderers back out from jail in 10 years instead of getting LIFE.

I'd love to know what Ann thinks is lenient if she's calling this robust!

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Funny how he was NOT a member of the SIMI and he is a non national.
The skeptic in me says he was a fall guy.

How many other dealers are menbers of the SIMI and have been "reported" but not convicted?

It is just my 2c btw.

What gets on my nerves is, when politicians are looking to shake things up or try draw more money from us, it's met with some resistance and so on.

If someone in power were to come out tomorrow and say, we would like to impose a new punishment for clocking cars and set it at, lets say, €5 per mile that it's found to be clocked.
There would be absolutely no resistance from the people, the politician would be deemed a feckin hero and the consumer would feel a LOT more confident when buying cars, therefore they would be more inclined to splash out knowing that it's less likely they'll be stung.

I just don't understand why nothing has ever been done about this?

As with almost every crime in this country the judges/courts let us down by inflicting a slap on the wrist instead of proper punishment. Disgraceful ruling.

I just got car serviced with this lad today. Was going to bring it back tomorrow to get tyres fitted and get some jobs done that were failed on recent NCT test. Second thoughts now.
