What maps app can I get for my Galaxy Nexus phone that I wont need a mobile internet connection while abroad?

If there is one thats decent it would be great as it would save on money while abroad

I know Google maps can cache maps but I would have to search for them in advance

Ill also want to be able to use it for directions so it would need to use my GPS I guess

OsmAnd has offline maps, you need a connection for directions though:

Google maps you can download the cache of where you want. I presume you have to pay for the license or something unless ya know somewhere else to liberate it from.
Got it earlier. Seems grand :pac:

Yep, Gmaps FTW, latest versions have "Pre-cache map area" that will save a square of all the zoom tiles to load offline.

    Have you used Navdroyd?

I see some comments saying that is incompatible with Ice Cream Sandwich and search is poor. Other than these comments it seems very good but just not sure whether to spend the €4.99 on it.

I used Copilot live for a trip to the US last year.
Was less than €5 if I remember correctly.

Used it briefly. Can't comment on reliability of search function, but the maps accuracy and coverage was good. Still on Froyo, so can't advise on ICS compatibility.
