I've just bought a mountain bike after having spent the past few years on road bikes. I currently use look keo pedals on my road bikes and need new pedals and shoes for a bit of off road. I don't want to spend a fortune. Any recommendations out there. Thanks in advance.

shimano spd (not spd sl) - shoes start at c. €50.

I use M647 pedal but I have also used the cheaper M424 they are fine, clip in both sides and have a platform.

Depends on the kind of mountain biking you want to do. The more out there riding is mostly done with flats. I use Egg Beater pedals most of the time with Shimano AM 51 shoes on my road and mountain bikes. I haven't had any trouble with them at all.

For general singletrack riding what is the standard? I find that when I hit even small jumps that I come off the pedals. Its going to end in a crash at some stage.
I'm just aprehensive about clipping myself in when popping the foot to stop a fall is so important when mountain biking.

What is standard are clip-in/Spd shoes and pedals...

Flat pedals are best used by more advanced riders...
