UPC HD 'vs' Sky HD

The only thing stopping me switching to UPC is the fear that their HD may be of a lower standard than Sky's.

There is an old thread on here that says so but I was wondering if anyone has a more recent opinion. I've never seen UPC HD but a friend has and he was shocked at how poor it was, this could have been the TV setup.

I don't want to get locked into a 12 mth contract and regret it!

    Any help is appreciated.

if your into HD then sky is the only choice, theres not much HD channels on the upc package compared to shy who have loads.

does anyone know if upc are going to add more hd channels to their lineup. if upc had the movie channels in hd Id go back to them otherwise its sky for me Im afraid.

The HD quality itself is fine, the issue is the lack of channels!
ESPN, BBC and Eurosport are fantastic quality, especially Eurosport.
Otehr channels such as History, nat Geo etc all fine HD.
The only rubbish one is Setanta but I reckon thats more of a Setanta Issue to be fair!

Im sure they are working to bulk up their HD channels but Sky have been very sticky about providing their premium HD channels, so I wouldnt be expecting Sky Sports, movies, Sky One, Atlantic in HD any time soon.

The UPC HD channels are pretty much the ones I would watch the most, I might miss ITV HD and FX HD.

If you're main reason for watching TV is sports, stay clear of UPC. But if you're into nature and history type of programming, they could be the way to go

I had UPC HD and I switched to Sky HD.

Once you use a HDMI cable and set the box to 1080i Sky and UPC look the same to me on the HD channels.

The bit rate and picture quality on SKY and UPC is very good and the HD channels.

It is just down to channel choice Sky has 50 HD channels UPC has 13.

If your into HD and HD movies-sports etc...Sky is your only option IMO.

UPC's HD box is terrible and i no numerous people who have constant problems with them.

I have UPC at home and have reservations about upgrading to the HD-recording box. Way to many issues with it, plus they are out of stock due to something in Asia.

I work in a call center for UPC and i deal with tons of people who have problem after problem with their DVR's and HD DVR's.

Seems like I might have to stay with Sky. Their new Sky Go service is quite good and I would image it will take UPC a while to offer a similar service.

Ill be honest if I had a choice there is no way I would pick UPC over Sky for TV. Sky might be more expensive but its worth every penny; better channel selection, better services and infinately better hardware and user experience.

As with the other thread Ive got to disagree with you there. Im not sure how youre not seeing a difference between the SD and HD channels; its a massive difference in picture quality.

I cant comment on the HD quality of Saorview or Triax compared to UPC, but your original statement that there is no difference between the quality of the SD and HD channels on UPC is quite simply wrong. Whether or not you are seeing it is a different matter entirely, but properly set up and displayed on a decent quality TV the difference between the SD picture and the HD picture from a UPC box is very noticable.

I think the HD on UPC might actually be a slight bit better than Sky's quality-wise, however, I may only be noticing that because when I had Sky I'd rarely watch a SD channel, with UPC there's not a big enough selection of HD channels for me to only watch them.

I would have thought that that was technically impossible given that UPC source off Sky/Astra ?

Someone just called to my door saying sky are about to provide the HD free of charge
but they were looking for 60euro to set it up.

Have UPC at home, the hardware / software is cruel.. The quality of the HD channels is good but the SKY setup is so much slicker.
