What is the quickest and easiest route to get from Drogheda to Claremorris?

I got these three from Google Maps (quickest on top, but third is the shortest):

    1) Drogheda, M1, M50, M4, M6 to Athlone and then Roscommon, Claremorris
    2) Drogheda, M1, M50, M4, M6 to Galway and then N17 to Claremorris or
    3) Drogheda, Navan, Mullingar, Longford, Roscommon, Claremorris

    Thanks!

I definately wouldn't take the Navan route. Did that last year on the way to Galway and it took ages. Going M1/M50 seems like it's out of the way, but it's much quicker (did that on the way back).

Drogheda to Galway is less than 2 hours outside of rush hour - not sure exactly where Claremorris is though :o

    Option 2, def.

Did (almost) the reverse a short while ago. Motorway travel is the only way to travel efficiently. Cross country-routes are grand if your in Forza/GTA mode, but otherwise forget it.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

As above avoid option 3 at all costs and pick one of the motorway options, if you need to avoid the M50 then go from Drogheda to the N2 then across by FairyHouse to Dunboyne and onto Maynooth and get onto the M4 and head towards Galway from there.

Thanks guys. I suspected Navan route would full of signals, round-abouts, local traffic and farm machinary etc. So now the question is the should I leave M6 at Athlone and then go via Roscommon to Claremorris, or if I should I stay on M6 all the way to Galway and then go up N17 (Tuam, Claremorris). It's about 50 kms more than the Athlone/Roscommon route, but Google Maps says it's only 1 minute longer. :)

//goes away to google speed camera spots along M4/M6

You should definetly leave the Motorway at Athlone. My suggestion would be to head for Tuam from Athlone instead of Roscommon,Claremorris is only 15 minutes from Tuam.

Go Athlone/Roscommon route if there is a chance you would end up in Claregalway during rush hour(s).

You have another choice to make if you go via Roscommon. In Ballymoe a right turn brings you though Castlerea and Ballyhaunis while straight on and right 2 miles up the road brings you across country and no major towns (my preference)

I should've stated I will be travelling on Sunday morning, so I wouldn't expect any traffic all the way there.

And will be coming back either on Sunday evening (it would be busy with people heading back to Dublin I would imagine - or so was the case back in 2002-2004), or Monday morning (week day, so I would definitly stick to motorway on the way back).

Thanks again for the suggestions - really appreciate them!

Athlone/Roscommon then head for Ballymoe - Williamstown - Cloonfad - Claremorris, this is the shortest route by far but the offset of that is that the roads from Ballymoe to your destination are not the best.

    There is a 4th option

    Drogheda,Mullingar,Longford N5,N17 Clairmorris

These roads have significantly improved over the years.

http://www2.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/Search.aspx says its quicker, cheaper and no tolls

    Its just a 4th option..

@forza rovers Good point. Tuam is a disaster during weekends at the moment. Most other times is busy with them stupid traffic lights that are on a set sequence.

Agreed re from Ballymoe. That route is deadly and best avoided if you are not familiar with it. You could meet anything on it and there's a myriad of bends on it:(.

Ah nooo!! I was almost decided on going all the way on M6 and going up via Tuam. Is it really that bad there on a weekend? (other threads here suggests 30-60 mins tailbacks)
