    Ford SportKa
    RenaultSport Twingo (slightly over)
Any of the little 3 cyl jap turbo city cars
    Fiat panda 100HP
    Citroën Saxo VTR/s
Current fiesta Zetec S is 120bhp but close enough

It's a long list but basically anything small, light and with a manual gearbox.

surely a VAG TDi is not the most exciting everyday application of 100-ish bhp?

what other cars could be had for similar purchase price/ running costs and deliver better driver "thrills".

    Define every day application....

That's the real issue, tbh. Everyone has different driving needs, and depending on that is where the choice of car comes from.

I'm driving a e46 320cd, and I'd be in tears with fuel costs if I wasn't tbh. At the weekend I did 400 miles in the space of a day. Half a tank or a little over @ 53Mpg is what it worked out as.

150bhp/265ft-lb - I wouldn't by any means class it as "powerful", however, it more than certainly has enough power to keep me happy on a day to day basis. I love how the e46 looks, it's big enough for everything I need to carry, it's comfortable to drive, I love the high MPG, it's handles well, and there's no hesitation with overtaking. The power for (safe) day to day driving is there. If I want more, It can be pushed up to 195bhp/330ft-lb with a remap.

Would I take an M3 over it? Every day of the week if I could afford the running costs.

TDI's have their place and are useful, there's no doubt about it, and anyone ignoring that is just idiotic. They're not performance cars and never will be, but that doesn't mean they can't be modified to the owners preference either (I'm not talking about felt spec here, don't worry). A car is a car, and whatever the owners daily requirements of a car, it doesn't mean they're not every bit as much a petrol head as the next person.

The smallest BHP output that i drove that brought a true smile to my face was an XR2 fiesta no mod cons like ABS etc just 4 wheels on the floor(most times) a go button and a stop button :D to answer this question you need to think old school.

Suzuki Swift Sport is another worthy option. Great fun little cars.

As said small, warm euro hatches are great too for the most part.

The only problem is that they may not suit most peoples needs, and I wouldnt fancy a tip in some of them either. They are also a lot rarer on these shores.

perfect! exactly the answer i was after, glad to see it!

i'm in exactly the same boat!

i'm driving an 03 vectra 2.0TD 100bhp. its as slow as a wet week, but its a big comfortable barge full of mod cons and like yourself i do between 4-500 miles a week so diesel is my only option right now.

i'd gladly go back to a petrol come september when my weekly driving should drop back to under 200 miles a week.

and this is it, if your happy with you 130bhp gt - red t, red d, red i, whatever then be happy with it, just dont be making mad claims like nothing else on the road can touch it lads :pac:

Yeah if you are happy with your motor, then much odds what others think.

The 2L TD Vectra wouldn't be the best example, try getting a spin in a 1.9 CDTi 120 or 150 BHP

    exactly :)

indeed the 1.9 commonrail options are lore lively, but i'm not chasing power here purely reliability and i think the 2.0TD is better in that respect.

It would be interesting to know if 100 BHP was the average BHP of cars on Irish roads?

You hit the nail on the head there, nice acceleration, minimal turbo lag, excellent mpg, very comfortable.

if its anything like the vectra i never thought 100bhp could feel so slow :pac:

genuinely feels slower than most cars i've ever owned (admittedly not many high performance ones)

Well I was having a little gest with my astra van comment(although I do have one) but it would certainly be quicker then a 100hp vectra. The vectra is much heavier and the newer CDTI engine in the astra has much better throttle response and power delivery. I'd imagine the gearing would be lower then a vectra too.
