Hah! That EMI's been around for a while now. Must be all scratched on that concrete block... I assume you have the plugin Paul?

The dbx is a great yoke, so simple. The Aphex limiters are similarly great.

Are the 160A versions any use. Was thinking of picking one of them up.

Sean - I don't recall though over the years I've used/owned various black DBX compressors.

Internet lore suggests that the X or XT are the ones .

A Boardist suggested the 166s. They're overeasy only (soft knee) - supposedly great on bass etc.

The I.L. suggests the hard knee Xs are the ones for drums.

Mad, I do indeed have the RS124 plug (and just got the Brilliance Pack) - first call on overheads.

Cool, I have a recollection of studiorat saying that the 160A was the only one worth looknig at. I might have dreamt it tho.

They're relatively cheap to buy which is also a bonus (160A retails at under 400 I think). I am looking for something for bass guitar, specifically when tracking so it might be a contender - well at least until I can afford a distressor.

Not selling mine but thought I'd chime in and say how much I like my 160xt. Great for kick and snare. I plan on getting a 2nd at some stage for stereo room mics. They're great on bass too and I've sometimes used it on vocals on the way in.

Found it hard to get one though- had 3 deals fall through before I got mine and when I did I got it off a guy in Spain from another forum.

From my reading on it people seem to rate them 160vu best, then 160x/xt and the 160a as the worst but that it will still get you 95% of the way there. There's also the cheaper 1 knob 163's which just have a compression knob so are less versatile but have the same circuitry and an instrument level input. DBX also made a stereo version of the 160's but I can't recall what the model name for this is. The 160a are the currently available version and go for 400 new, used the x or xt versions tend to go for 200-250euro when you can find them. The VU versions vary depending on their condition.
The 166's are a newer model which sounds quite different and have a gate built in and the 266's are a cheaper version of these. You'll often see these in live racks in venues around the place and they do a prety good job of being a handy, easy to use comp/gate.
