Quick question for you motors specialist.
Planning to buy a 2007 Galaxy 1.8 TDCI 125 hp, was told that this model has a Volswagen . Is this correct ?
Was told to stay clear of the Galaxies with a ford engine.

    Thank you

Nope, 1.8 Tdci is a Ford engine. Same as Mondeo/focus.

The older galaxy had a 1.9 VW engine alright

Thank you for the fast answer.
Is the 1.8 tdci a good engine then ?
Are all the Galaxies post 2007 fitted with ford engines ?

The 2.0 diesel engines are branded Ford DuraTorq or something, but they are actually a Peugeot/Citroen motor.

Not that that's bad, the 2.0 is a good bit more flexible than the 1.8, which has a very narrow power band.

I don't know who told you to steer clear of a Galaxy with a Ford engine, but if it was on the basis of reliability they couldn't be more wrong if they tried (contrary to popular perception, VWs are not that reliable at all, however the old 1.9 TDI is bulletproof).

The 1.8 TDCi is very reliable (apart from the DMF, but that can happen with any diesel).

HOWEVER, if it was on the basis of the power deliver of the engine, then whoever told you to avoid that engine would appear to be right.

I don't have any experience of it myself, but a lot of people who have driven a car powered by that engine will tell you that the 1.8 TDCi has a very poor power delivery, basically when you put your foot down you'll get nothing, nothing, nothing and then all of a sudden you get a burst of power and then it's all over.

The 2.0 TDCi is not really a Ford engine, it's from Peugeot/Citroen (as are most diesel powered Fords), but as long as it's serviced on time every time and with the correct grade oil it too won't give any trouble. It is supposed to be less prone to DMF failure than the 1.8 as well.

Some people say that these engines are not as reliable as older diesels, but these are the same people who don't look after their cars and don't service them on time! Anyone who gets that engine properly serviced with the correct grade oil will not have any problems with it, as diesels go it's one of the best when it's looked after!

Great , thanks for all the details.
What oil would be best for the 1.8tdci ?

The 1.8 tdci came in 100 and 125bhp with either a 5 or 6 speed gearbox. Top choice is the 125bhp 6 speed. The 2.0 tdci is 135 or 140bhp.

I've the 125bhp 1.8 in my Mondeo and I'm quite happy but that's the lowest I'd go. Avoid the 100bhp, the car's too heavy.

I have a Mondeo with that engine, has 160k on it, no problems, touch wood....

bought the 1.8 tdci in 125 bhp yesterday.
Very nice to drive and the engine is fine for the size / weight of the car.

What? Charge you for a shag?

TBH I was reading something in work about DMF and reasons for failure. It can be caused for faulty Injectors, MAFs, city driving (stop/start driving), turning the engine on and off a lot. I must try and dig this up and attach it here.

OP fair play for getting it, Would be getting one myself if I could aford to change.
