    Hi all,

I'm trying to fix up a Laptop for a family friend and Windows Vista wont allow me to do updates...whats better - redo Windows Vista (by gettting a disc for it) or getting Windows 7 disc and putting Windows 7 on it..

    Thanks

Windows 7 by a country mile! You can get OEM or upgrade discs relatively cheap for home premium version

windows 7 is easier to use and less of a resource hog ,
vista has improved markedly with service pack 2 and 3 and is a good os ( in my opinion)

either would suffice - for a alaptop 7 is probably the way to go for the lesser demand .

    however it will cost.
is there a reason you cant update vista - i literally completed a reinstall of vista home premim today -
updated without much issue - however i had to download service pack 1 and 2 seperatly to allow it to continue updating , (service pack 1 is no longer supported and 2 is a requirement for continued updating)

Assuming you need to buy another OS (don't have the Vista recovery partition/disc) I would reccomend Windows 7. forget about XP, its old and probably wont have drivers for the laptop available anyways. Its also not sold anymore officially and support is ending for it in 3 years I think.
I'd go Vista if the recovery option there (and make sure to patch it up with service packs), but if you need installation media I'd get windows 7

Do you have a Windows 7 license? The upgrade from Vista to 7 isn't free. To get F8 to work you need to keep tapping it at startup, that is at the point where you see the toshiba logo and keep tapping it until you see the menu
