Hi everyone, I want to pursue a career as an art teacher its what Iv always wanted to do. However in my final year of college studying ceramic design my lecturer advised me on my final year project. From this I never grasped my concept as I was constantly being told my concept should be about such and such a thing. I regret it so much as I should have stood up for myself and done what I wanted, having got on really well the previous year. Each week my lecturer would say my concept was wrong, I worked so so hard in my final year as she had barely passed me in semester one. As a result to my amazement after being praised on my work by everyone I only received a third class honors degree. I spoke to lecturers but had no luck they were adamant with my result saying my concept was wrong but work ethic was really high. Is my chance of pursuing a dip in art education gone? I'm currently waiting to take part in a TEFL course and a first aid course to add to my CV, is their any extra courses that would help me too?? I'm shadowing an art teacher at the moment and also organizing art classes for children and taking part in a youth club. Please any advice would be great, thanks in advance. I also thought about emailing my lecturer asking for a letter of recommendation on my work ethic as she said if I was being marked on my dedication and commitment to the year my mark would be really high, I'm so disgusted and don't know what to do.

I'm not sure where one does art for art teaching but you will struggle to get onto the HDIP with a third in your degree. You need to investigate the PAC system, it's all based on points rewarded for degree/teaching experience etc. Trinity is based on interview I think so you could check there too. Hopefully someone with art will be along to give you advice but to be honest with the surplus of teachers you are going to struggle to get onto the dip and to get a job with a third class degree. Sorry to be pessimistic. Can you repeat final year or your project?

Contact NCAD and see can you get on their Professional Diploma in Art and Design Education with your degree and if not, what can you do to better your qualification.

I know very little about HDips, but have been through the first aid stuff with teachers and potential teachers (plus my partner is a teacher). if you haven't already done your first aid course, ask your trainer for an independently accredited course, as this is what most of the health and safety inspectors prefer in schools. If you have the FETAC level 5 occupational first aid course (preferable) or one of the Irish Heart Foundation CPR courses, then you can be one of the people in the school with a properly accredited qualification. Your trainer will almost certainly run these courses, so just ask. They can be a little dearer than the non-accredited courses, but if you want to be able to say to a potential employer that you have a proper first aid qualification you're better off biting the bullet and doing the proper nationally recognised course.

In terms of the other issue about having a third class honours degree, I used to know a teacher with a third, but lost contact with them, so not sure how they did it. Would a masters help? I know it's an expensive way of getting onto the HDip, but may be worth it on the long term (of course some masters degrees require at least a 2:2 for entry).

    Good luck whatever you do!

SCRIBBLERDEE i can relate to your dilemma with your college lecturer for your Degree!! They mark your work based on who you are rather than the work you created, its comical! They enjoy the power and control they have over you, such a horrible bunch of people. i am so glad to be finished with them and their mind games. When i think back to my final year of studying for my fine art degree i shudder!!!
