Paypal vehicle/motorbike scam

I'm selling a motorbike on Donedeal.ie. Suddenly there's a guy named Victor appears and sends me email that he is interested in the "Item". I knew straight away that he is trying to scam the **** out of me so I decided to play a little game with that looser. Have a read of those conversations LOOL:

    FIRST EMAIL FROM SCAMMER:

"Hi mate, I have looked at it a few times now, and after looking
around, I'm satisfied with the great condition but what's your actual
price for it. I love a bargain, so i would like to get it as soon as i
can. I would be able to make payment through PayPal, i find it the
easiest way to use my credit card safely and is a safe and reliable
method of payment... Let me know your price for it . I hope to hear
from you soon, and i will make all transportation preparations for the
it to be transported to my home in London,UK. If possible can you send
me some recent picture or video of the item ?"

    MY REPLY:

its 1900euros and all recent pics are on the ad.

go on so. give me ur details on paypal, i'll just run a report with paypal on the phone to confirm your identity and we're good to go.
also the item will not be sent untill I receive the payment and after its all confirmed. The item will be sent after I take the money out of my account.

Please reply to me with your email address registered with PayPal and full name.
also state which item you are reffering to ;)

    REPLY:

"Thanks for your response.1900euros is a nice and acceptable price. I
will be adding the 3.9% PayPal surcharge to the total amount i will be
paying you. So i will be paying directly into your PayPal account
without any delay, and i hope you have a PayPal account.

If you have one already, just send me the address to send it to, which
is the email address you use for it or you can send me a PayPal money
request, so once i receive the details i will go ahead with the
payment through PayPal and then i will contact my shipping company
after you get the payment. I will need your home address for the
merchandise to be Picked Up by the Shipping Company."

As you see, he avoided the email and name question so I replied asking him for that again, then he got kind of confused:

    "Hello,
I will arrange the pickup ... With the issue of my
details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all
paperwork will be done by the pick up agent so you don't have to worry
about that.First do you have a PayPal account for the payment?"

    My Reply:

First: What ITEM you are referring to ? I have tons of ads everywhere and I need the link for my ad that you apparently what to buy !

Second: What is your full name, email address associated with your PayPal account, your address.

Third: What is the name of your "Pick up agent". What is the company providing this service and please consider handing him the money so he can pay me hand to hand.

After that one he got completely lost in the conversation and started bulls*iting again asking me for my address and paypal email so I sent him completely random email address and home address with a fake name to give him **** load of trouble LOOL:

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and make sure you end the
advert immediately.I will be sending the payment shortly and i will
email you when am done with it.More so you will be notify by PayPal in
your email address after i make the payment,so just make sure you
check your email often and often to confirm payment when it is
    completed.

    __________________________

I hope that this prick learns from that :D

watch out for that guys. he is a scammer when he wants to buy stuff like motorbikes or cars on paypal. have a game with them to waste their time ;D

He isnt alone, and this isnt a one off, this happens hundreds of times a day on sites like DD and is a very old scam, but I guess it must be working if they are still doing it, 'Victor' will most likely just copying and pasting the same wording in reply to as many ads as he can..

Ya probably just copy and paste all the writing but still needs to waste his time to read my crap so I'm happy to put him off at some point :D

He made the payment onto to fake paypal account and now I just wait for confirmation. Im gonna pretend that I received it so he sends his "shipping company" to my house which doesn't exist anywhere haha..

That bi*ch is sooo getting what he deserves..

So, what exactly is his scam ? How would it work if you were gulable enough to think he was genuine ?

They send you a fake email which you think has come from paypal confirming the payment. You ship the goods off.

Or they send you more by accident and ask you to send them back the balance by wire transfer.

Or they use stolen card details to pay via paypal which could be coupled with you sending money back to them - when card is found to be stolen paypal come after you for the refund.

There's a few variations to it.

I just received an identical email to the one mentioned above in response to an advert for my son's motorbike which was posted on Donedeal...though the reply email address is rane.fred8@gmail.com he wouldn't give his name, phone number or any details despite me asking numerous times, are people really stupid enough to send their items before receiving the cash into their hand???

Yes, unfortunately so. This is why such scams are very popular, and very profitable.

I have received a few similar e-mails from an Anthony McCauley. Looking to buy a car I have for sale on donedeal..he wants to ship the car to London.
He has sent me his address and even a scan of his passport.. Do you guys this this is the same scam?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,893 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

    Not sure if this is the same Anthony McCauley , but you never know ;
Anthony McAuley (46) of Brackloon, Kiltullagh, Athenry, was stopped by custom officers in Dublin Airport on March 1, 2009 as he was about to board a flight to Malaga. A search of his suitcase, which he had checked in, revealed €35,050 concealed in white envelopes hidden among his clothing.

He had booked a one way ticket to Malaga three days earlier, which had been purchased using the credit card of another man, who has convictions for drug possession

Read the tips for selling on Done Deal , and it will give you a reasonable answer to your question .

I can be a pope with little help of photoshop :) it's very easy to change stuff on a scan with help of a good editing software.

Hi guys, just thought I'd bump this thread or warn people that this scammer/s is still out there. I got a text this morning with no number just the name lucid89 where number should be asking me if my cat on donedeal was still for sale and to reply to the email rane.jos4@gmail.com if it was so I replied and got a few weird messages in return including this

    Hello Friend,

Thanks for your response,Am ok with your price and I need you to understand that i am willing and ready to purchase it right away, put it off the AD site, consider me as your favorite buyer, and Please note that i live in USA but right now am in Astor on the sea and due to my work as a marine engineer,I will not be able to come to view the merchandise or come for the pick up but i have a  shipper/mover who handles my shipping arrangement anywhere in the world and i will make all transportation preparations for the it to be transported to my home in USA.If possible can you send me some recent picture?,My shipper will be coming for the pickup, after you have received payment, which would be through PayPal,So do you have a PayPal account for the payment?.

    Regards...

Obviously knowing it was a scam i replied that it was sold. Just a warning for people that it's still going. Can't understand how a number didn't show up in text though lol.

    Scam.

    thank you

they tried it with Adverts.ie postings today.
Same name and address as previous posters.

Could hardly string a sentence together, no haggling with the item price.
    And fake Nigerian address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,987 ✭✭✭mikeym

To stop this from happening the seller should state on the ad that he/she will not be shipping the car/bike abroad and that the buyer will have to collect the car/bike in person.

    Simples.

He just tried with me for an iPhone I'm selling first under a James Brown email addy but I was suspicious when he wanted to pay 100 Euro post for it ??? Reckoning he's in the navy and it's for his son !
Luckily I googled his email and found it was a scam, politely refused his offer 2 seconds later got another offer from Declan broudier but I had seen on the scam warning that it's the same person, why are they not banned if it's been going for so long ?

Watch out for 'Marcos Horst' wishing to buy your bike.
    Another scammmer!

Same thing happened me, car ad on Donedeal, this time from SeanMcColm (though he spells (1) Sean Mccolm ..... first clue)

Thanks for the prompt reply. My name is Sean Mccolm (1/5). I believe my son sent you a text message to email me for the sale. I will like to know the lowest price for the car and i want you to get back to me with more pictures and its current condition because I can't come over to inspect it. I am buying it as a gift for my son that just graduated in Turkey (2)

I am a Royal Marine Corps (3) in the UK and due to the nature of my work, phone calls is restricted. It was my son that check your advert (3) and sent you a text to contact me (his dad) on my email address because I am currently offshore.

You need not worry yourself about how it will get to him there in Turkey as I have a contact of shipping company there that will be handling the pick up and the paper work (5)

    Regards

    Clues:
    (2) Son graduated in Turkey? why, even if he was station in Turkey, though there are no Marines officially based in Turkey, only RAF, why didn't his sone go to college in UK where he would have free fees as his son is part of British Armed Forces..
    (3) I am a Marine Corps? do you mean Im in the marine Corps, and who calls it the Marine Corps anyway
    (4) Grammar (even required for the Marines)
    (5) SeanMcColm ... in the British Marines? yeah right , #800years

My Reply - the car is in very good condition. there are two minor scrapes (pics attached.) let me know what kind of pictures you want, I have attached a couple more which didn't go up with the ad. The lowest price we could take is 7300 Euros as we have had a lot of enquires already, this really is a bargain. No pressure. Its up to you.

Response: from Sean (aka Sunday to his Mammay)

Ok,i just wanted to make sure nothing has been left out
Thanks for the information, it was really of immense help
i am happy to purchase for my son at your asking price and do you have a PayPal account,as i will be paying with PayPal for our own protection,PayPal act as a neutral third party. it is safe, secure and reliable, and also due to the fact that i am currently offshore and i won't definitely be able to make it to the bank to wires money across to you.It is what safe and convenient for me. plz do check it out.
    Regards

    Clues:
(6,7,8,9,10,11,2,13,14,15,16,17.....) Grammar, Grammar, Grammer !!!! Scammer
20+ - pidgin English ... I lived in a certain nameless sub-Saharan country notorious for certain scams (but i wouldn't want to paint the whole people with that brush, as they are amazing, kind, generous, loving and incredible) for over 3 years and I recognise the slip into pidgin english, would be surprised if the second email is from his little brother (who still has credit on his phone) whose business english is not up to scratch yet as he spends too much time on his phone........

    My response:

    haven't decided yet!!!!!!

My ISP seems to have stopped providing me with scam emails, and I haven't been sidetacked by such entertaining ones for ages! Love those names (must remember Jensen Ambrosio next time I want to hint to the reader that a character may not be what he seems). And the way Sean Mccolm explains that he's the dad of his son.......
    Please keep them coming!
