    Hi Guys.

    Have cancelled sky

What is the best set up (apart from buying a new tv) to get my soarview channels with record pause and rewind i.e. same as sky. Will a usb stick do the job or will I need a external HDD. I was looking at the Ariva but this is not approved.

    Price is important.

Sh1t. MOD Please move this to Terrestrial..

There are no Saorview PVRs, only basic receivers with "record feature". There should be real PVR shortly. (Dual tuner and internal HDD).

You need "Freesat+ HD" PVR if you want to record UK TV. The Sky box will receive all the Free UK TV channels, but won't record.

Mostly but not entirely. I'd wait and see what make the certified ones are.
Sony and Humax reported to work, though there might be issues with Summertime or Series link (not transmitted yet).
Panasonic have a bad track record on compatibility.

If price is important these are quite expensive just to get Saorview. As they are Freeview receivers, unless you live in certain border areas or se coast, thet will not receive any other channels.

I would do as watty said and wait for awhile and see what develops. In the meantime I would pick up a cheepy Saorview receiver. http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?Opticum_HDT50_Irish_DTT_Terrestrial_Receiver-pid180.html

When you say Dual tuner do you mean that you can record RTE1 and watch TV3. Like SKY+???

I appreciate the whole 'living near the border to get Freeview' thing, but I don't want a box to get Freeview. I would just like to be able to record Saorview. Simple as that.

I was thinking that, despite the cost, one of these boxes may do the job?

I would be happy to wait for a Saorview certified receiver, but still no sign of one anytime soon.

yes. Even when the 2nd Mux is running and they are on different Mux.
Apparently Saorview PVRs appearing very shortly, if all goes well.

t c, I dont think thats an approved Saorview receiver.

NIMAN, Powercity are selling Saorview STB with 4GB USB, I got the Vision Saorview STB with an 8GB USB and its simple to record - works excellent.

I also find the Vision Saorview STB works perfect with Freeview combined.

How shortly is " very shortly" if you'd care to hazard a guess? :)

    No I wouldn't.

At least not very specific. Probably between now and ASO. :) But that's a guess.

Could you buy a cheap Saorview tuner and a chead DVD recorder then you could record through it by running the aerial through the recorder then to the TV, that should do for a while until something new comes out.

Some people near the Border and South East coast can get N.I. UK Terrestrial Freeview or Welsh UK Terrestrial Freeview. A few can receive the Isle of Man. A Saorview receiver can receive “Freeview” in suitable areas, but not “Freeview HD”. Info from http://www.saortv.info/free-uk-tv/
(I hope the owner does not mind if I reference the above site, I think it is an excellent site, thank you.)

Living in Co. Wexford I have two aerials combined one for Saorview and a second for Freeview, I get all the channels working perfect on the Vision Saorview approved STB but not Freeview HD.

No problem sharing it Friendo as long as you credit with a link. :)

    Thanks.

    @friendo.

None of the receivers mentioned by niman are Saorview approved, any-way, so what?

If its only for a short period it would do the job, only real difference is Mheg5 for teletext..........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

    It's not just for teletext.
Also you have NO WAY to know what other aspects are incompatible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Is there an EPG for them all and can you record them all. (excluding the Freeview HD obviously)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,410 ✭✭✭FRIENDO

Yes, EPG for them all and you can record them all.
Only one recording at a time and I can't watch another station while recording.

I got the Vision Saorview approved STB in Powercity for sale at 50Euro and a 8GB USB for under 10Euro.

@FREINDO : I'm also in Co.Wexford. Approx 13km as the crow flies from Wexford harbour. I would prefer to have the Irish and UK channels on one box with a 7 day epg and record with a USB stick. I've been told on this site and by others that I cannot do this yet that seems to be exactly what you have! So if you don't mind me being a nosy divil what set up do you have. In terms of Aerials, STB's the whole works.

You'd think they would mention PVR Ready on that box, might get a few more sales. Can't see it mentioned.

    I have a groub B for Preseli/Wales Freeview and a Wideband for Forth/Saorview.
I have added a mast head amp for the Group B aerial, keep meaning to add one for the Wideband/forth. At the moment I have the Wideband connected to a plug in booster. (I think masthead amp would be better)

I live over 25miles from Forth, live in a blind spot of Mth Lenister.
Had great trouble in combining the aerials, with my Mheg5/Mpeg4 LG tv I would loose Saorview in certain weather also with Ferguson ariva combo I would lose Saorview signal in certain weather.

However with the Vision Saorview approved box, Saorview has been perfect, channel 49 Freeview has dipped once when combined, generally perfect.

If you read post 799 from aerial man, he also used a group B for Wales and Wideband for Forth.

They may not, as I dont think Saorview have approved a PVR receiver yet.
It is a good clue when they give a free USB with the box, or in my case I bought the USB.
(On the day I purchased, they advertised a more expensive Saorview STB 'Walker' with the free USB - this was how I found out) :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

    It's not "PVR ready"
A PVR has dual tuners and internal HDD.
    It has a "recording feature".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,184 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Fair enough, but I think they should mention that it can record in some way or another.

Many TVs now advertise 'USB' but the vast majority of uses of the USB is only for playing back photos, MP3 files, and at best films.

If the USB allows you to record, I think they should say that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

I think they don't because it's not reliable and also problematic if wrong format used and unless an HDD, very limited on HD.

If the shop advertise a feature they are personally liable, not the manufacturer if it doesn't work "as advertised".

Cheers FRENDO! I'm around 5 miles from Forth Mtn. and have line of sight on a clear day. I also should have no hassle getting signal from Wales. No major obstacles between my site and the coastline. So I should be fine.

Are the aerials combined into one line down into the box? Or do you need a separate line for both? How are the joined. Are they just Tee'd in to one another?

The STB you referred to earlier in the thread, is a Vision brand. I saw one of these this morning in Tesco for 89 euro. Said it was PVR ready. Is this the same as the one you have?

And one last question, where did you source the group B aeriel?

VISION, Saorview, VST8010, Make sure you get the correct USB or Hard drive, The guy in Powercity gave me the USB for under 10Euro 8GB

Telling the truth I had given up on combining Saorview/Freeview with the LG tv and Ferguson combo box, I kept loosing Saorview, mainly due to my distance from Forth I would think.

I have two cables run, one for Freeview and a Second for Saorview, I just combined with a cheap white signal splitter at the back of the Vision receiver.

You may be better running with a proper combiner, I am sure plenty of the lads on boards can give you good advice on a good combiner.

I bought my aerials from http://www.freesat.ie/ You may have to make a special request on the order.
http://www.satellite.ie/ Would also be a good shop.

I find Both above shops have quality customer service and after sales advice.

I do not work as a satellite/aerial installer, you may be better in getting advice from somebody more qualified in this field.

If you want to send a PM and if your ever in Gorey/Ferns area you can call up and have alook at the set up, no problem, will put on the kettle.

If you can receive from Mt. Leinster & can wait until October, you'd be better off using it rather than Forth.

The channel change that takes place at Mt. L. after analogue is switched off will make for easier combining with Preseli (Wales) & will increase your chances of receiving the Freeview muxes on UHF channels 49 & 50 (HD on 50), if using a mast mounted diplexer.

Can you estimate how much (hrs) worth of programmes you get on your 8gb stick?

Any issues with the HD programming? I assume it just records and plays back in the same quality as its transmitted in? I know of course that it would use up a fair bit more space on the stick.

I think it only just over 4 hours for SD and possibly over 2 hours for HD (RTE 2 HD).
The day I bought the USB they where sold out of 16GB USB.

You can also set the Saorview STB for live pause.

I have a Freesat Humax Foxsat HDR a couple of years, so that does for Freesat channels.

I would have got a bigger USB for recording if I didnt have the Humax.

Be careful buying a USB, I have heard of one person having trouble with the wrong type USB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,184 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I would have thought that a USB stick would have been easier for a STB to power and write to than a HDD, even a 2.5" one, as the HDD has a platter to spin etc and the USB has no moving parts.

Reading some reviews of STBs they said that they work better with HDDs. I assume this is powered ones which need to be plugged in all the time?

I see no reference to MPEG anything in the spec (downloaded the manual too), only DVB-T & MHEG5.
