Had a look at mates partner van. It way down on power. It had various fault codes relating to egr valve. I recorded them and cleared them. After a short drive, the code for egr temperature sensor - signal low returned.
We noticed the the turbo waste appears to be controlled by a vacuum pipe. This wastegate is not getting any vacuum under any conditions and so there is no boost built up. If this is moved by hand, turbo appears to work fine.
So what controls the vacuum that controls the wastegate? Will egr problems affect this vacuum?
    All suggestions welcome?

    Hi mickdw,
Sounds like there is a vac leak/or failed vac pump...remove vac pump and check to see if the strainer on the vac pump is blocked...?
if it is add a good engine flush and drop the engine oil...turbo is next to fail..
There is a turbo control solenoid at the back of the engine which supplies vac to close the wastegate and when the ecu see's high boost pressure it applies vacuum when required which opens the wastegate.
if you get under th engine you will see the solenoid under the hp pump/egr heatexchanger.
    it looks like this...

    Best of luck with it...;)

    Thanks alot.
So you are saying that vacuum pump applies constant vacuum to that solenoid and solenoid controls the vacuum going onwards to wastegate actuator. Is it just the one vacuum pump supplying brakes & this systems? and any idea where the egr faults are coming into this?

Yep the same vac pump supplys all....the egr is electric so its not related to the vacuum circuit...i'd say the egr valve needs cleaning or replacment.
Check for vac leaks with a mityvac if you have one.

    Last question:
ok, so there should be permanent vacuum at one of the pipes coming to the solenoid.
you say there is no connection between the vacuum system and the egr but is it possible that the ecu could be stopping boosting due to the faulty egr?

    Thanks for the help

Problem was the solenoid valve that controls the vacuum. All good now.
