bought Dunlop Sports in August 2010 for e360 fitted on a petrol Octavia. Changed to winters in Dec '11 so about 16 months and 18,000 miles so far.. Tread only about 5mm now.

according to the AA tyres should last 30,000 miles.

any recommendations for what tyre is most economical/ safe.

Do you have a link? If they did say this its a stupid, randomly generic thing to say.

You might get 20k from the Dunlops you have, I might get 40k.

There are hundreds of sizes, load ratings, speed ratings, brands and models of tyre and they will all wear differently depending on the vehicle they are fitted to, driving conditions, maintenance, driving style etc etc etc.

    and
you would hope to get a minimum of 20,000 miles out of front tyres on a front-wheel-drive car, and double that for rear tyres

I bought a 2nd hand Citroen C5 this time last year and the dealer had put new tyres on it. They were “Sunny” tyres which from what I read are budget tyres. I have since covered 45,000km in the car and haven’t changed the tyres. The car passed the NCT only last week so the tyres are still definitely road legal. I do a lot of motorway driving but have never had any issues with the tyres – including stopping in the hurry in the wet. I wouldn’t usually buy budget tyres but I really couldn’t fault the Sunny tyres on my car! When the time comes to change it will be hard not to consider them again, given that premium tyres are twice the price!

I've got an Octavia with Dunlop SportMaxx on it. They went on at 68k km and are at 93k km now and all four still have 5mm at least left on them. That's a lot of motorway and national road driving.

Hard tyres with no grip wear less then soft tyres with loads of grip. Grip levels are synchronised with wear rate. That's why the Irish love their cheap Chinese ****e. Not only do they cost less, but you replace them less.
