Hey lads, weekend nearly over

Just wondering, since I got a new PC, bout 2 years ago, havent touched mame. (building up my retro hardware empire :) Has it progressed well in the two years?

The "newest" game I played that ran well was probably X Men Vs Steetfighter at the time.

What are the latest games that run now and on what version of mame :P

Mame is going backwards for the most part, every new release breaks something different. Stick to tried & trusted releases.

Some Cave games were added recently, & then removed. They remain however, in unofficial builds. Though you'll need a serious pc to run them I believe

It's running Street fighter III third strike now though too, which was worth the hassle of an upgrade for me. The MAME devs were a bit slow to react after the CPS3 hardware was cracked a few years back, but i'm on mame 1.41 (i think) and it runs it lovely.

Go to their site and check out the gameslist.txt files and the whatsnew.txt files for their releases and you'll get a good idea what version you'll want to grab.

I got MAME 0.145 last night so will try it out later and see what the latest games are on this one.

I'm away from my computer but I think the full romset is pretty close to 300GB.

I think the update packs will bring .144 up to .145 in maybe 3-5GB.
Buy yeah, you're fine with .144 anyway.

Do you have the .144 with the Cave games enabled on it?

I think so Steve, I got them off yourself, both mame and the cave games. that repacked version of mame you gave me with highscore enabled. will they be listed in that?

.145 is yet another backward step.
I am slightly concerned at how tight things are running as far as bug fixes go. Aaron’s recent batch of changes have left a number of Saturn / STV games broken*, clickabale artwork broken, the tilemap viewer in indexed modes broken, the cheat system broken, and possibly one or two other outstanding bugs caused by the tag changes which have yet to be shaken out. Kale’s recent changes also mean that many games in metro.c are still broken and a couple in suprnova.c as well, then you’ve got some longer standing regressions too such as some of the Taito GNET games, broken PSX hardware quads and a couple of other (looking further back there are still the performance regressions from some memory system updates..)

Mamedev are like a bunch of self important uber-nerds at this point.

If you got them from my site then it will be ok(latest patched 0.145 emulator is up there as well now if you want it).

    @EnterNow
Yeah, MAME has gone a bit weird in the last couple of years. New versions that are worse than the last etc.
Still, I like to have the latest version with all the extras but still have the older versions to fall back on if needed.

"Howdy Steve Mate! Any chance you'd copy your mame romset from your external hard drive to my laptop?"

    Steve: "Its 300GBs......"

"Era **** it, I'll buy the hard drive off ya so!"

If there's 5GB of that set that are useful & playable, Id be surprised. The vast majority of the size if from CHD's & Laserdisc images, little of which run correctly.
