A vauxhall royale 2.8 has the same carb. I know of two others having problems with these carbs. The carb flange gasket and inlet manifold harden and crack allowing air leakage to weaken the mixture and cause flat spots cutting out etc. Also the distributor drive cam working the fuel pump can wear down on high mileage engines causing low fuel pressure.
Try a temperory electric fuelpump to eliminate this.

    Good info there aidhan.

I am working on a 77 250 at the moment with bad running issues. It had previously been with a reknowned Carb specialist who charged a fortune but didn't make it any better. Carbs are impossible to get and nobody I asked does an alternative. One UK specialist said it would be cheaper and easier to change the engine !!!

The last time the price of these carbs were on a list they were approaching €2000.

The problem is also made worse by folk trying to tighten down the carb to seal it. This warps the carb body and it is then scrap, it will never run right.

If it is your own car and you have the time my only advice is to hunt for a known good one OR take the carb off carefully, do NOT invert it, and try to measure and square up the flanges through careful filing. Us a home made paper gasket on either side of the block together with some suitable sealant.

    Best of luck !

Thats a solex carb. Problem child. I have a vauxhall 2.8 that has the same carb. It has a weber 38 dgas. Same as 3.0 ford v6. Need to google adaptors for weber conversions. It converts the 4bbl with a bolt on adaptor to match the weber. There is also an adaptor that allows factory air filter housing.

Results. Smoother running. Easily tunable, better mpg and parts widely available.
