Best .22lr subsonic ammo

    Heya lads,

I have been trying out the remington subsonic ammo this weekend and also I bought a box of yellow jackets. I paid €5 for the subs and €6 for the yellow jackets, I was happy as larry heading home thinking I got a fantastic deal and was in for a great afternoon plinking. On inspection of the subs I noticed nearly all of them were very loose in the case, you could actually twist them out if you wanted. The yellow jackets seemed fine and I was looking forward to doing some bunny bashing with them.

I have a Cz 455 thumb hole with a sound moderator. With the subs I was getting little to no report which I found fantastic as they're the first subs I ever fired. As for the accuracy it was just over 2 inches at 50 yards. This is highly unacceptable in my opinion as I wanted accurate ammo for clean dispatch of rabbits.

On to the yellow jackets obviously being supersonic they were alot louder but this didnt bother me as I was hoping for better accuracy and killing power. I couldnt believe it. The holes were spat all over the page. I found the accuracy of remington absolutely shocking, has anyone else experienced this?

Considering I can shoot federal 36g hollow points at 70 yards with all 5 holes touching eachother I dont think its my marksmanship thats the problem

Anyone able to recommend decent consistent subs ? Have only seen Remington available in my dealer as alot of lads are after the HV stuff !!

Eley and Laupu subs shot 1/2" @50m from my CZ .22 style and varmint. and the SK in the 500 tins

I find winchester subs the best in my cz very tight groups and very rare to get a stray and if you want supersonic the cci stingers take the .22 to a new level

Have heard great things about winchester subs but have never seen them  anyone know where I could pick some up? preferably on the east coast and in bulk !

Also I'd love to know what your all paying for .22lr ammo just to see. My local dealer has some great deals on the HV stuff but a shooting grounds nearby is about €4 per box more expensive.

Every rifle will be different, but I've found winchester subs work best for me.

I have tried the the cci subs as well found them good for accuracy
but they are very loud for a subsonic round

Have had good experiences with Eley HP subs. Nice clean kills. Have heard the Winchester ones are even better but never used them or seen them used. Eleys shot well for me too. Think the Eleys were €6.50 a box when I got them before. Really must pick up a little sporter for the rabbits whenever I get a few quid. Some of the best sport there is.

If you're having trouble getting ammo - Any dealer in the country can legally send you ammo by secure courier, add's about €10 to the bill usually and you've to be home to collect the parcel. But, it's a very handy service to avail of if you want something you can't get locally.

"The best" smallbore ammo is going to vary from rifle to rifle. And I don't mean from make to make or model to model, I mean that two rifles, same make, same model, different serial numbers, made five minutes apart on the same machine from the same batch of steel, will both shoot best with different ammo.

At the very high end, folk test multiple batches of ammo from a bench, pick the best and buy thousands of rounds from that batch.

For bunnybashing, that's serious overkill, just buy a box from as many manufacturers as you can find and fire them on a range at a paper target. You want groups of ten shots (no less), taken from a rest, taken slow and steady in calm wind conditions. One group per ammo type, and between each group, clean the barrel with a patch or two, then fire five or ten rounds of the next batch into the backstop and then shoot your group. (Shoot two if you want to be thorough).

Choose the smallest regularly-shaped group and go with that. By regularly shaped I mean that it's no good if you have nine shots in one hole and then a flier an inch away from the group. You want them all in the one circular-ish hole, and the hole should be between 16 and 24mm in diameter (or thereabouts) for good ammo out of a CZ.

And once you've found that group, buy that ammo and only that ammo and then - and this is most important - completely forget about ever having done this and never worry about the ammo again. It's way too easy to try to fix your shooting with a hex key or a gadget or by constantly batch testing. I did that for decades and it was a complete waste of time. Spend your time learning to shoot on the range instead (and don't tell me you don't need to, there isn't a hunter - or target shooter - alive who would gain nothing from time on a range!)

    In Subsonic ammo my cz452 likes the Lapua @ €6.05/50, cci @ €12.50/100 and the eley @ € 7.62/50,
The cci Volocitor @ €5.85/50 is a great HV, round.

My 10/22 likes the Lapua best i think.

They are priced at Shoot.ie in Galway.
I have beem looking for the winchester subs for a while with no look, tried ordering online and they have not had them in stock at the time.

The Remington seems the worst of all i have tried, very odd round, dirty and inaccurate.

    My 10/22 DSP

eley, cci and winchester. I have to give knock down power to the winchester as the thump out of it is hard to miss.

I've used them all in my CZ452 Luxe and found some are very good and some are very poor on accuracy. Dont touch Rems, a very inaccurate round.
CCIs too tight for CZ chambers, you realy have to push them home hard!, which can't be good!
The best I have found for my rifle are Winchesters, the're excellent, clean and very accurate, 6euros a box. The next would be Lapua and you could pay around 8euros a box, too expensive, but clean and accurate.
The ones that I find are very accurate, clean and very quiet are RWS if you can find them, give them a try at around 5 euros a box they are excellent value.
I you need high velocity rounds then all my mates use the CCI Velocitor, more power than you will ever need!!
    Good luck and safe shooting.

    Thanks,
I rang Tom Kelly and he only had a few boxes left and said it might be 2 weeks before he gets more in,
Might as well wait and "stock up" to make the journey worth while.

I have noticed that the supply of Winchester ammo seems to be sporadic. I tend to buy in bulk when I can and keep my eye out for when they are back on the shelves. Mind you, at this time of year I'm not shooting bunnies.

Anyone know where you can get cci velocitor rounds, i have been looking for them for a while and cant get any. Duffys galway does them but doesnt have them in stock.

John Lambert in Camolin has any amount of them.

Winchester X are a great choice deadly accurate. Patrick Carley in ballymurn in co. Wexford has them 5.50e a box I believe. And as said before for supersonic you can't beat CCI stingers. Stay away from Remington rimfire ammo their useless.
