'Holiday' Memberships

Interested in peoples ideas in this one.

I'm a member of a golf club in Donegal but live on the East coast (we have a holiday caravan up there). Even though it's a great course, it has a relatively low membership (less than 500 and falling) and that seems to be the norm for these types of remote courses.

I don't understand why these courses in holiday areas don't offer 'holiday membership' type deals - say €300 to keep the GUI there and then 50% off the normal cost for any round you play.

I know alot of other golfers that would jump at the chance of holding their membership at a remote club so they can play Open comps around the country - the club gets the benefit of them playing say 10-15 rounds a year at 50% full rate (that same person probably wouldn't be prepared to pay the full rate for a round). Surely that must be useful revenue stream but are the established clubs too proud to offer that sort of membership?

^^ Its called Distance membership, and generally you don't have to pay anything additional (above sub) either for rounds you play

Reading up on it a bit more, you generally have to be a full member of a 'home' club as well.

I still think the setup I am talking about must be a revenue stream for these remote clubs. I would jump at the chance if it was offered. I can't see any downside for the club?

For Distance?, don't think so. There was a category called 'Country Member' where that worked that way. Maybe the club you mention don't offer Distance

OK, thanks for clarifying that 'Distance' and 'Country' are two different things.

Last time I asked, my club didn't offer either but want to ask them again as things have changed in the Irish world of Golf.

At least I have the terms correct. Is distance membership a common offer for Irish courses??
