Career Change help???

I have a bsc hons in architectural technology, post grad diploma in fire engineering, many technical qualifications in the energy field, a FAS course in basic project management and half way through a masters in sustainability and about 10 years experience but....... I'm considering a career change due to the severe lack of opportunies for advancement or salary. I can earn 35k as I am and that's unlikely to change in the next 10 years and given my qualifications and experience it just seems a waste of time so the time might be right to jump ship before I invest any more time or money in this industry.

I have always had a fascination with the stock market and the idea of trading etc I like the idea of assessing companies and investing in their future progression but don't have clue if I would be good it or how realistic it would be to try to get into that business. Ideally I don't want to go back to full time study but is there any other way?

as i find myself awake past 5am on a Saturday night/ Sunday morning thinking about changing career I thought I should put it out there and perhaps someone has found themselves in a similer situation or knows someone that has that might have some good ideas?????

    Many thanks!!

You sound like me, only a few years on. I'm currently reading 'What Colour Is Your Parachute' by Richard Bolles...I would strongly recommend giving it a go :)

Do what I did, say to yourself "Sod this" and join the police! There are several people with your qualifications in my job who changed mid-life and say it was the best thing they ever did. You'd struggle to find a job that someone in my job hasn't done at some point in their lives.

There probably is, have you considered doing a course part-time in the evening?

Look for some kind of postgraduate diploma or masters that is specifically targeted at people who do not have a business background, but already have a degree.

You could do all this from the comfort of your own home. Read a few books, read investment forums. Open up practice accounts and give it a go in your spare time.

If you're good at it and can consistently deliver a good % yield from the market then get your accounts audited and get the necessary qualification for managing other peoples money. Doing it this way proves that you can make other people money and that in itself is worth money. Operate on a no yield, no fee basis and start pitching to prospective clients with your audited track record.

It'll take you a few years to get there but doing it for yourself will be far more rewarding in the long term. Also if it doesn't work out you'll still have your job and other options to consider.
