Just got a lift back from town there. The taximan told me that the fare before me used this line once they were close to his house in the suburbs.Obviously he was pulling the old I,m a Guard I deserve a reduced price card.

The taxi-driver said he played dumb and said "what do you mean are you a member of the local gun club".The guard didn,t like to have to actually articulate it but he said " no I,m a member of an Garda Siochana".The taxi driver pretended to process this and stated "well I,m a member of the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation and you lads never give me a reduced rate on my parking fines so that will be the full fare". He said he could feel the guard staring at the back of his head for the remainder of the journey with venom.I thought the taxi driver was an absolute legend for standing up to the subtle threat/sense of entitlement that was being displayed.

I know that the Boards Garda protection squad are going to leap into action after I post this and attack me relentlessly but I feel that it is indicative of the lax discipline of a force that think they should always get special treatment just because they have a badge. In the current climate the average taxi driver is barely scraping by and to expect him to reduce his fair just because you are a guard appears ludicrous and incredibly arrogant. The Gardai do a tough and thankless job and most of them do it well. But this kind of behavior cheapens the force.Pay your full fare like everyone else for gods sake!!!.
