Hopefully somebody will be able to answer something I've been wondering for ages.. On motorways and national roads every so often you rectangular areas usually in pairs linked together on the road with tar around the edges. They're more common on motorways and are often found near motorway slip roads.

I'm assuming they're something to do with measuring the volume of traffic, speed of cars? Or do they indicate the location of services running beneath the road?

Took this picture at Lucan as an example:

Presumably induction loops to monitor traffic usage? Same as the ones at traffic lights to detect cars.

I'm guessing they are on a straight bit of road rather than at or near lights?

They are induction loops for traffic flow monitoring and as Guy says you get them a traffic lights as well. What you see on the road is the asphalt sealant in the slots they saw cut to lay the cable in.
