Saw this last night but couldnt access boards---

Ryanair are doing deals to Budapest from 17th Feb - March each way only €9.99! so your looking at €19.98 return (if you use prepaid mastercard) then just your hotel!

Flights go Mon,Wed,Fri,Sun both ways. Very good for a weekend break (Go Fri comeback sunday!)

If you are not using a prepaid mastercard you have to add €6.00 both ways, per person... No luggage fee if you bring only hand luggage!

Checked out hotels also and there around €50 for two people for two nights for a 3-4 star (obviously much cheaper and more expensive ones)

You could also fly to Budapest and get a flight the next day down to Crete, Cyprus (also 9.99!!)

Very nice for a cheap city break!! Lots of seats availible (for now!)

Hope someone gets some use for this!

Budapest is a fantastic city, BARGAIN flights to a really cool cheap city

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 Mrking

Yes Budapest is well worth the trip and its very cheap. Lots to do. :D

Was watching the news last night and read about Hungary's national airline closing - Malev and I had been on the lookout for flights to Budapest since before xmas. I knew Ryanair were starting in March... but then on the news they said they were starting early so decided to have a look.... and found them :D

Vienna is only over 2 halfs hour by train (about 8 a day) and very good for a day trip as the station in Vienna is at the top of the main st. I have done it many times before (leave at 8 in morning, back at 7 that evening)

The bargain flights are grand but I found the city not that exciting when I was there. Mind you it was over a decade ago.

and you can get a minibus private from the airport for very cheap prebooked.
Airport is gas spot, lovely spin in.
There are nice apartments near the city centre and remember not to drink in the main square, pure robbery

Wonder if they will this one a respray before sending it back.
Should be some offers to Barcelona too

This would be good for smokers. Cigarettes are about 600 forint, roughly €2. The airport stocks all major brands if you want to buy them on your way back, and the quality is as good as, if not better than Irish for brands like Marlboro, Silk Cut, etc. Note that Hungarian cigarettes only have 19 instead of 20 for some reason. So you could save €70 per carton on Irish prices.

Those who go should also get to a Tesco or Auchan and pick up some Tokaji Aszu.
It can be bought everywhere but there are usually offers in those supermarkets. It's a super dessert wine and expensive over here. You can probably pick up a 3 or 4 puttonyos (This is the grading system) for less than a fiver. It comes in 500ml bottles so it's easy to bring back a few. You won't be sorry. Spirits are also for nothing.

Got two flights for 63 altogether. Budapest is lovely but we've always been there in summer so hopefully it won't be too cold. Booked an appartment for 12 euro a night each! The fact that there are thousands of geocaches there sold it for us. Thanks OP :)

    Ronnie,
Can I ask what apartments you booked at that price?
    thx,

Booked return flights for 3 people for less than €100 all in. Thank you op.

    I have 2 questions:
    1. Where is the best place to book an apartment? RonnieQuibbles where did you get yours for €12/night?
    2. What is good to buy in Budapest? Anything exceptionally good value? What about watches? I'm in the market for an unusual(and good value) watch :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 RonnieQuibbles

This is the place we booked http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Apartments-Opera/Budapest/2903#availability
There are plenty more around the city for similar prices. The difference between hostel prices and guesthouses/apartments is pretty minimal.

If you have a kindle it might be worth considering "Budapest Sights 2011: a travel guide to the top 30 attractions in Budapest" for $1.22, and "Budapest, Hungary: A Concise Travel Guide" also for $1.22. Thats two travel guides to Budapest for $2.44!!!!!

@RonnieQuibbles thanks for the link ... I'll definitely check it out!

I've noticed that if I use Firefox I can't see the prices (just says low fares available) without clicking on a specific day.

In Internet Explorer the prices for each day are displayed.

Booked for 7 days for 19.98 and used the prepaid mastercard. I think that's officially my cheapest holiday ever. Some excellent hostels in Budapest too between €10 and €15 a night. Could be a weeks holiday flights and accommodation for under €100...

    Hi wyndham,

Hope you dont mind me asking i have some questions for you about the cigs. I usually stock up in poland when i go there (15blocks around)...

Is it around €2.00 for brands like Marlboro or are they dearer?
Flying home via Terminal 1, is there a shop there that sells brands? Any limits on what they sell you (how many)? Marlboro in there? (You might not know)...

Also would it be cheaper to buy them in Tesco maybe?

Sorry for those questions, but seeing as i am going i might buy some to stock up on. :D

    Thanks

If you change the country to "Czech" or a european country it will show the prices... for some reason UK & Ireland site has that "low fares" bull...

To change the city you will see "Ireland" on the top right of the page, just change it to another country (all prices will be in Euros anyway & english)

"Perfectcard" from Dundrum SC. Slightly different from the standard store card in that you can use it online. costs €5, then its free for 12 months. €3 a month after that so cancel it!

Ha yeah. It's a great way to spend a holiday, we never have to decide what to do or see, we just follow the co-ordinates....

I stayed in The Loft Hostel in Budapest back in 2009. In a very old building mostly occupied by locals on the lower levels, up some old stairs but at the top was a lovely modern hostel with very friendly staff.

Marlboro are exactly 610 forint I believe, so about €2.10 at current exchange rate. The price is printed on the cigarettes so it makes no difference where you buy them, unless you go to a cash and carry, like Metro, though these are not open to the public. The saving is only around 30 forint on a packet anyway, much like the retail margin on cigarettes here, so not worth the hassle.

There is a large 'duty-free' shop in both Ferihegy 1 & Ferihegy 2, with no restriction that I have have seen on amounts purchased.

Remember, these are EU duty paid cigarettes, so whatever is deemed reasonable for personal consumption is acceptable. In Ireland, the arbitrary amount is 800 cigarettes, in the UK it is 3200 cigarettes, so they will sell at least up to that amount presumably.

That said, it would be better for you to go to somewhere like Tesco and get some of your cigarettes there beforehand, purely for the sake of packing them away. Ryanair will not allow a second carry on bag anymore, even a small bag bought in the airport will have to fit in your carry-on luggage or you will be stung for another checked in bag. Ground staff are on commission and will nail you. Tesco and the other supermarkets generally have a separate cigarette counter and theres no problem with buying by the carton.

If you don't like the offer why bother posting?

Don't understand those that complain about Ryanair, if you want luxury service pay your extra for it. Wouldn't have got to so many places as I have without Ryanair and their low prices.

I just gave my opinion on the offer - I'm allowed to do that am I? there are so many hidden costs with ryanair, an offer like that isnt a true bargin.

flights from Dublin to Budapest for myself for under 40euro for 4 nights is most definitely a bargain. it costs me nearly that for a day return to Dublin on the train !!

That wasn't an opinion, it was an incorrect statement.

No, there's not. Yes they try and sell you extra stuff but you don't have to take it. The flights mentioned by the OP were 9.99 each way, nothing extra unless you opted for extra stuff.

€20 for a return flight to Budapest isn't a true bargain? I look forward to seeing what offers you class as a bargain in future so.

The current rrp of Marlboro is 680 florints in shops, markets and the airport. At the current exchange rate of 285 florints to the euro, that works out at 2.39 euro a pack.

If anyone has booked flights and is looking for cheap but good accommodation, Eurostars Budapest Centre Hotel gets great reviews on TA, etc and I got three nights for 2 people for 115 euro! Looks like it's perfect location-wise, too.:)
