so just went to pay my tax online. 1.9 car on the cc based rates. 626 euro if i pay in one lump for 12months but if i pay 2 six months its 694. thats 68 euro in the differance:eek: 704 euro if i pay 4x 3months giving 78 euro of a differance..

why are we being punished for not having the cash upfont to pay the full year? 68 euro is a lot of money for them to send out 1 extra renewal letter.

There is no answer to this, theyre just keeping the system in place as they can get away with it. Also cuts down (minimally) on people doing 3 months on/off as there is less of a saving.

I tax mine for 3 months and always tax it 20 odds days after the old disc has expired, never know when a beyond economical repair is around the corner when driving a 2.5 worth feck all :pac: Wouldn't like having anymore than 2 months tax on the screen at a time.

If I tax a truck 3 months at a time it costs nearly 400 extra for the year as opposed to doing it in one go..

It would be cheaper for you to buy a 1litre to 1.4 thats crazy paying out that sort of money on a 2.5 and then the cost of fuel for it.

    I don't want a 1 litre or a 1.4 though :)

I have no problem with the tax or the fuel consumption to be honest, I just wouldn't put €1000+ on the screen in tax at a time.

I'm quite happy to pay the extra to tax it quarterly too.

Lots of things in life are cheaper than other things.

The way I look at it is that they are rewarding you for paying it for 12 months up front with a lower rate.

What they should do is have it dame rate as annual if you setup direct debit, would make the whole system more efficient.

Sounds like you're only seeing this now. It's an administration charge to encourage people to tax yearly. Same as paying your insurance with monthly installments, you're paying more there too.

Advice I've given to mates is to take out a credit union loan to pay a full year if possible, as the rates will be better. (Obviously only if you plan on keeping the car that long)

    From here.
Half-year -55.5% of the annual rate (disregard cent)
Quarterly -28.25% of the annual rate (disregard cent)
Arrears Monthly -1/10 of the annual rate (disregard cent after multiplication)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

the same as the way they reward you by upping the tax on fuel, vat on parts+tyres etc, not repairing the roads because they have no money (before anyone starts i know motor tax has nothing to do with roads)

like roverjames i wouldnt be happy driving a small 1-1.4L car. i dont mind paying more for tax but having to pay almost 70euro just to tax it in two six month periods instead of one 12 one is just stupid. they could of left the 6 month payment at 315 and the 3 months at 160

im just ranting!! it really sickens me that they always seem to hit you when you are down in this country

I can see how the premium was justifiable pre internet days, the extra admin argument doesn't really cut the mustard now though imo.

Ye, in the same boat myself, didn't want to tax it for a full year until it passed the test.

Yep, I'd even go further and say they should be discounting it online. Of course they'd have to sort out the commercial vehicles online first.

It's not credit , you are paying in advance.

And if you can find more than €5 admin in printing any a4 page ,the posting it then you are doing something wrong.

My auld 1.9 is costing me 704 p/a in tax. It just sticks in my craw to pay out a full year's tax in advance, but I don't think the extra charges are justified.

The charge is annual - you are being given credit.

Printing an A4 page? Try running a building, paying staff, etc...

The CC are as inefficient as ****, but let's not be naive.

Look guys, easy answer that a lot of the country do is tax it for 3 months, drive it for 5 0r 6 then, if you get away with it, sign it off the road for the untaxed period and tax it for 3 months again. If you don't get away with it it is a €60 fine only on top. Just my tupence worth....
