    hi could anyone explain to me why on some heating systems with oil and solid fuel installed in a home that both systems cannot be on at same time.would be interested to know the reason or reasons for this.

    Some solid fuel systems have no thermostatic control and so can cause the system to overheat and cut out the oil stat on its hi-limit thermostat.

    when you say thermostat on solid fuel where should it be or whats its function

    On your oil boiler you have a thermostat that turns off the boiler at the set tempreture, your solid fuel doesnt, some have a means of thermostatically closing the air damper to slow the burn but other than that you cannot turn off the heat source thermostatically.

    I'm no expert on stoves and i'm sure that someone will correct me if need be.
