No operator signal - Nothing happens when you search for networks.

Have re-setted the phone to factory settings, but no luck.

He has tried a different SIM card but still there's no signal on the phone. Phone hasn't been flashed/modded in any way, its running android 2.4.6.

Google seems to say try switching 2G/3G off and on again and wait a few seconds but It doesn't do anything.

He bought the phone 2nd hand and the warranty is expired so I'd assume he's fecked?

Might have been robbed and the real owner got the phone got it restricted via the imei. I never seen a restricted phone but I presume it ends up like the phone you described.

He bought it off a reputable chap off adverts afaik, and has had it 4 months. Thanks for input though, I guess it is a slight possibility!

Check the imei number on the handset.
If it starts with something like 0049* instead of the usual 35*, it is probably a testing handset that was released by some of the networks.

There was a flood of testing handsets sold through Adverts last year.
