passat diesel - slow to accelerate after new timing belt

The timing belt went in my car even though it had been replaced 20k km ago. Anyhow, garage did all the work etc and supplier of old timing belt paid a significant amount towards the repairs...however, since i got it back it has been slow to accelerate. its ok up to about 80km per hour....then it will sort of jerk a little and is very slow to go up to 120 km per hour. At low speeds it seems ok but when goin up a slight hill its not great.
Any ideas or is this just a consequence of the enginge damage? Reiliable garage fixed it...he told me it should be as it was before and bring back if its not for free....any ideas what it might be or is it that the enginge will never be as it was before?
    Thanks

not sure. I think there is a new head or head gasget....is that possible? He went through it all with me but kept receipt to give to parts supplier who was paying the bill...got it fully serviced for nct aswell.

If youve a leak at headgasket or valves arent sitting right you will be down on power. Get compression checked. The valves will burn out afaik if they dont seal properly.
