Mahera/Tonabrocky

I'm located near Headford, Galway and have clear LOS to the Tonabrocky transmitter across the lake about 14 miles away. On the careless assumption that that was the Saorview, transmitter for my location I purchased a Group A contract aerial for an attic install split to two TVs (unamplified).

First confusion was when I noticed the signal was stronger on horizontal polarity than vertical. And indeed when I tuned in the STB and my Samsung TV both showed they were indeed picking up Channel 48 from Maghera 40 miles away and not ch 26 from Tonabrocky. Signal strength is about 33% with quality about 83% but the picture appears absolutely fine.

I assume this is because Maghera is transmitting about 500 times more powerful than Tonabrocky? However i'm still surprised that I can pick up what appears to be a fine signal using a mismatched contract aerial in the attic.

The smaller the aerial the wider band it is.
Also Aerials don't suddenly stop working out side the group, the gain gradually decreases (slower with smaller aerials) with increasing frequency.

Signal strength isn't very meaningful, but quality is the important one.

I get Maghera here south of Shannon river fine on Analogue. I use Woodcock though.

Maghera is on high ground, big mast and high power.

Thanks. Well I'll get a correct group aerial soon anyway given they are not pricey and I'll be distributing the signal to more rooms in the future I'm sure.

You could try your group A pointed to Castlebar. Channel 22. What kind of aerial is it?

Why do that when there's obviously a great signal from Maghera?

No sense in replacing the aerial either!!!!

Well the aerial cost me about 13 quid (it's a UHF 10 element contract aerial) so it's not a major investment and it's in the attic so no big job to change it.. As of now I'm getting about 80% signal quality to 3 TVs. Over-time I'll probably add a couple of other TVs/Receivers which will degrade the signal somewhat so I might as well give myself some extra margin by using an aerial of the correct group
