Essay competition

    Hi all,

I'm a 4th year med student. My college runs an essay competition each year. The winners of the competition are offered medical or research placements in the states and third world hospitals.

The title of the essay is "why I should be selected" or something to that affect. We also get to pick our top three of around ten placements.

I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to structure this essay. Should I focus more on personality traits and grades or on the experience I've gained in the area I would like the placement in?

Has anyone ever written an essay like this in any context?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
