Just looking at the BHP figures for the bmw 1 series here http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/bmw/bmw-1-series-guide.asp and it's giving the 120d as 184bhp, is that correct? Anyone know what year they came with that kind of power, I presume the 1 series is also rear wheel drive?

yep, the current 120d uses the same engine as the current F10 520d and the oncomming F30 320d so 184 bhp from sometime in 2010 IIRC, whenever the new 520d came out.

1 series is indeed RWD, i nearly bought one a few years ago, went out to view it and the owners son had it collecting parts, ended up buying an E90 there and then :D

Depends on year but they wouldn't be far off it (Always thought they were 177BHP here) and yes, they are RWD.

EDIT: Kceire beat me to it!

the older (few months old) 120d uses the 177bhp engine, but when the 1 series got its facelift, it gained the same 20d engine as the new 5 series. the current 320d (E90) still uses the 177bhp engine, until its replacement arrives next week, the F30 3 series, which the 20d 184bhp will be in.

That's swift for a diesel, anyone know what year they started with that engine? Has to be one of the quickest diesels with under a 2.0l engine with that bhp.

as per my first post, it first appeared in the new shape 5 series in 2010, then in the 1 series when it was launched.

the 184 engine was in the 1 series in this shape :

    bmw-1-series.jpg

So whenever that shape 1 series was launched, maybe mid-late 2011?

    This shape :

    thumbnail.aspx?q=1598465313242&id=a6970111dfd7c5a0e6c72bbf9387d477

    had the 177 engine.

Different strokes for different folks and all that but the BMW 1 Seires wouldn't hold any appeal whatsoever for me, but maybe that's just me.

Also, like the Audi A3, C Class coupe they appear as very much a budget version of their bigger saloon counterpart.

Mind you though I'm sure one with 184bhp would go like ****e of a shiny shovel:p

Never appealed to me either but if I can have 177bhp in a rear wheel drive and still get 50 - 60mpg it might be worth a look as a mile muncher. Currently only getting 30mpg in my 2.2 diesel with 177bhp.

Is the IS220d really that bad?!!! Test drove one last week, found the gearing awfully annoying!!

You get used to the gearing, serious mid range power, MPGI is worse in winter, my foot has a lot to do with it. I can get 45 if i'm really good but it's a little like driving miss daisy, love the car but need something with more mpg, would still pick it again over a 3/5 series it's a really comfortable car with plenty of power, you need to be doing about 140km to use 6th gear. Mine has probably every extra which doesn't help with the weight.
If I wasn't doing as much milage i'd keep it no problem, have it a year and half and not a bother with it. I want 60mpg so a mini cooper d seems to be the front runner.

Would you not go for the 123d (from '07)? Same 2l diesel engine but with 204BHP. No other manufacturer got so much poke out of a 2l diesel at the time. I think Honda got about 140BHP out of a 2.2l (their first diesel)

I'd imagine a 120D with a remap wouldn't be too far off those figures if the 123D are commanding a premium ?

I can't find any in Ireland for sale and only one in Northern Ireland here http://www.usedcarsni.com/80343950 works out at €16,226 + Vrt of €3118, that's a lot of diesel for the lexus, don't think I could bring myself to spend nearly €20k on a 4yr old 1 series, great suggestion though, i'll keep my eyes peeled.

Which one is that the 335d?

E90 D3 is the 2.0 litre TD engine with 204 bhp.
335d is the 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel with 286 or 272 bhp depending on what year you buy.

How do you know if it's a D3, the ones I see for sale are 320d's with 164bhp like this one http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201201206442367

A 320d from late 2007 onwards has 177bhp stock and can easily be remapped to 210bhp these days for around €350/€400. My 2008 318d with 143bhp from the factory was remapped last year and now has around 180bhp, torque was also increased which is really where it matters in a diesel. BTW the LCI E92 320d got the 184bhp engine last year.

The 123d might have more power but it also an additional turbo to achieve this which imo is just one extra expensive component to potentially fail.

But which one has 204 bhp stock? can you point me to one for sale?

The 123d has 204bhp stock but they are as rare as hen's teeth in this country.

    But the e90 is a 3 series, from what kceire said there's a 3 series with 204bhp.

I've driven a 120d. With very little weight over the rear wheels it could be a bit of a handful even in the dry. Made me pay attention when I tried to turn out of a side road in the wet, to get in to a small ish gap in traffic.

Haven't been on a long motorway spin in one to check fuel economy, but I did deliver a 118d to Drogheda a couple of years ago and I think that was showing 4.3L/100km for the journey.

yes, both are E90's, but totally different cars.
Like comparing the 316i to the 330i

you wouldnt go out and buy a 330i by mistake, you go looking for the D3 specifically.

its a different car built buy alpina.

Alpina are an external tuning company licenced to tune BMWs. Similar to Barabus and Mercedes Benz.

There's that of course. But what would you get when you remap a 123D? :D

Buyers of modern diesel engines seem to have no fear at all of expensive components breaking :D

DMF, DPF, turbos, injectors, they love that stuff :D

But seriously, multi stage turbos are what it is at. Petrol or diesel. It's the only way to give a small efficient engine a lot of power. And a very wide band of power delivery which is great for day to day driving

Did someone just say over 200bhp from a 2L tractor!?!

    I'm converted!

    Actually, no I'm not! :p

The alpina is a 3.0l, no?

No, it's a tuned single turbo 2.0. It was also, for whatever reason, impossible to get with any kind of decent specification.

The D3 looks like it could be a runner, within budget, just one question any idea how it would be classed for VRT, closest on the Vrt site is a 177bhp msport diesel, Vrt on 06 one is around 2k, could it rise up much higher for the alpina...doesn't seem to be any here or in the north.

get it remapped and youd get another 40 ish bhp...
