Structural/Civil Engineer looking for new direction

Hi,

I'm a chartered structural and civil engineer with 10 years experience and am currently unemployed almost 2 years on and off. There seems to be almost no possibility of finding a job in my field in Ireland.

I am actively looking at post graduate courses and masters to branch into other areas, expand my expertise and get better job prospects.

I have looked at a number of possibilities (including secondary school maths teaching) but nothing really jumps out at me.

Does anyone have any guidance on what would be a good direction for me??

I was an architect and after doing a similar course am working as a software developer. There are other areas in IT such as project management, business analyst, software testing, any of which you could port your existing skills to.

have a look at the MSc in Business Analytics (see other thread). This stuff is applied maths which often appeals to engineers wanting to redirect. Obviously there are more civil engineers of late. The IT end of things has to be of interest, but engineers can usually handle the maths aspect very well.
