I had an interview a couple of weeks ago for a job i really want and am very well qualified for, the interview went fine although one of the interviewers said she had to leave early as had previous commitments (odd I thought as interview was arranged a week in advance!)
So that left me with the HR manager, who was very enthusiastic and said I would be called for round 2 of interviews, he asked what my position is jobswise and I told him the truth that I have been offered a position so need to make a decision on it however would far rather this position.
He seemed fine and said that he hoped to have me back within 10 days for round 2 but that they were looking to meet with as many applicants as possible.
Since then I sent him an email reiterating my interest in the position and asking for an update (after 1 week), when I didn't hear anything back I left if for 5 days and gave him a call on his mobile and left a voicemail, saying that I understood they have a process in place re recruitment and did not want to cause any pressure on him but would love an update on whether they wanted to proceed to round two, still nothing back. Is this a non-runner? they know I have a decision to make so it seems like they have just decided not to contact me again? I am not going to contact them again anyhow, just looking for opinions/previous experiences?

To be honest, if your were told it would be about 10 days before you were called back you should not have sent the email and you shouldn't have called. Your actions seem pushy and your only at interview stage. It's not a trait an employer would be looking for. They might call you back but I doubt it after the call and email. You should have just sat it out until day 10 before making contact.

Keep plugging away at the interviews and if you can try and close the deal in the first interview, don't be afraid to ask questions in the interview that may help you get the job there and then.

Thats what I am afraid of :(:( feck it anyhow! They said that I would be back in within 10 days, so thats why I contacted them, I will have to chalk that one down to experience I suppose, the thing is I have all the experience they need and would be good at the job, but I suppose there are plenty more out there in the same boat!

I think that you interview and chances of getting the job were over once the primary interviewer left the room. I have seen this happen occasionally where busy people decide the candidate is not suitable, that they need not waste any more time and leave HR to wrap it up.

The reality is none of us know.

Maybe the department manager is on holiday or sick.
Maybe the HR guy is on holiday or sick.
    Maybe the position was axed.
Maybe they have delayed making the hire.
    Maybe they hired someone else.

    We don't know.

Can I ask though - when he said 10 days he probably meant 10 working days. When you say 1 week and 5 days, do you also mean 10 working days? If it hasn't actually been 10 working days you may still be contacted.

I am looking for roles too and it seems that the recruitment process can be slow. There is often a disconnect between HR and the line manager. Plus, roles are being revised all the times. I have been for a couple of interviews and the role has been pulled subsequently. I don't think it is any harm to follow up.

Thanks everyone for the replies/opinions. My head is a bit wrecked with the whole thing, it is very hard going to interviews and then not getting any feedback at all. I just think that the least a company should do is let people know what their decision is. I hear all the time now about people going to interviews even to the second round and beyond and then never hearing anything again, it is incredibly unfair.

Just a quick update, they called yesterday and apologised for not being in touch. I am through to round 2 and they said I had no worries in relation to my performance at the first interview as I have all the skills they need. Am delighted, just shows you never know!

That's great news, well done.....up until your last post I would have said that many companies don't provide feedback which is frustrating as you are hanging around pulling your hair out waiting for an answer.

    Best of luck with it.
