Home made speed limit

Hi I think that I have discovered a speed limit that does not officially exist including signage for approx half a mile of 50km limit that has been erected in a very amateur way and for no apparent reason . All special speed limits are supposedly shown on pdf maps shown online by the county [ Galway ] and there is no reference to the limit that I am referring to . a query to the council has gone unaddressed for a couple of weeks now despite them promising to get back to me .So my query is this , is it illegal to declare a speed limit on the road outside ones house an erect signs to this effect ? There must surely be many implications for someone doing this . I am also thinking of personally removing these signs ??? There is also a continuous very wiggly line down the road [ which is perfectly straight ] which looks like it has been painted by primary school kids and is also totally unjustified . Any thoughts please . M.P.P I should mention that this is on a small rural road that is otherwise a 80km limit .

If an offense has been committed it is probably a planning permission offence for erecting the sign. Maybe criminal damage for the road. But you have done your bit by informing the council. It's no longer anything to do with you as regards enforcement. i suggest you contact the council again to get an update from them.

I am thinking that if I am correct them someone is guilty of a deception though possibly not a fraud as there is no financial aspect , by imposing this limit on countless road users . I am posting this here because I think that whoever is responsible must have some influence to have pulled this off and the council have as stated ceased to communicate with me as promised .

Deception isn't a crime. The only benefit this person has gained from their deception is a safer road so you can forget about anything along those lines.

The road is not necessarily safer . Proper signage procedures follow clear guidelines which have not been followed here .

Is it more dangerous that people are going slower?

It could be if they are trying to read signs that are erected in the middle of a series of sharp bends with very little forward visibility and the wiggly white line is mesmerizing . Also the frustration of drivers faced with this ridiculous situation does not necessarily make for safer driving . My God it sounds like you might be thinking that it is a good idea , perhaps we should all be at it and then there will be no respect for any limits real or not or perhaps we just watch the country grind to a halt , oh hang on thats already happening.

To be honest it wouldn't bother me. If it's not legitimate i wouldn't obey it so it's not like it would disturb my life. It is not your sign to take down though.

If the geometry of the road is such as to challenge the ability of drivers to read road signs, then you appear to be arguing in favour of a lower speed limit yourself.

If the signs are erected in the middle of a series of sharp bends then how can the road be perfectly straight?

Coming off a main road there are signs indication a 80km limit as usual , then after a mile or so of bendy road including an entry to a nursing home with poor visibility ,at the start of a half mile straight section there is a sign attached to an esb pole on the wrong side of the road stating 50 and some distance another on the right side of the road . so for a start where is the limit meant to begin the first or second sign which are quite a distance apart ? Then after one of the longest straights on the whole road and JUST around the first bend of a series of tight bends there are a matched pair of signs advising a 80km limit again , the reverse of these signs indicate 50 from the other direction and the positioning of them is ludicrous . I cannot understand why various posters are trying to rubbish what I am saying .

Kilcolgan to Craughwell rat run from Kilcolgan end .As you you pass out a long row of large expensive ' mansion' type houses set well back from the road.

I am sure the apologists on motors would tell you to obey it regardless of its legality.
Personally I would ignore it and keep telling the council until they are removed.
